In a satellite communication system, comprising a hub and a plurality of heterogeneous terminals, the hub may split a bandwidth segment designated for a forward channel into at least two carriers, wherein some of the terminals may listen on a first carrier and some other terminals may listen on the at least second carrier. In this system, the hub may re-arrange the split of the bandwidth segment between the various carriers populating it in real-time or substantially in real-time, while the carriers are actively transmitted, and without causing loss of service and/or loss of data to terminals listening on those carriers. The terminals may be configured to track the carriers as they are re-arranged and to maintain seamless service to the end user throughout the re-arrangement process.

Multi-carrier satellite network supporting heterogeneous terminals

The present invention relates to a system, device and method for two-way satellite communication using a dual channel communication configuration to make better use of limited bandwidth. The two channels include a dedicated Unicast channel for each remote VSAT terminal and a dedicated Multicast channel that is a shared resource for all the VSAT terminals in the network. Each VSAT terminal is provided with two separate tuners, one for Unicast information and one for Multicast information. The system thus provides Unicast information through the Unicast channel to the Unicast receiver in the VSAT terminal to individual destination VSAT terminals, and sends Multicast information to all VSAT terminals via the Unicast channel and the Unicast receivers in each VSAT terminal.

Dual channel two-way satellite communication

A satellite communication system including a central satellite communication terminal and a multiplicity of remote satellite communication terminals which communicate via a satellite, apparatus associated with each of the multiplicity of remote satellite communication terminals for transmitting a burst of information within a time slot and having a characteristic which is independent of the time slot and receiving apparatus associated with the central satellite communication terminal for acquiring the characteristic during each time slot and receiving the burst according to the time slot and according to the characteristic, whereby multiple transmissions may occur concurrently within a given frequency bandwidth.
