The present invention is directed to a system and user interface wherein a multifunction copier, equipped with a Universal Serial Bus port, accepts data directly from a USB-Data Storage Device (USB-DSD) for the purpose of printing, e-mailing, and faxing. The system contains a copier containing a computer-controller having at least one USB port interface. The controller has a service that can either be enabled or disabled by a system administrator. The service is capable of performing email, printing and facsimile functions. When a user inserts a USB-DSD into the USB port on the controller, the service presents the user with the three options stated above. Once the user selects the desired function, the service then invokes a document conversion utility, which scans the USB-DSD and displays the supported files found on the DSD. Each desired function will have multiple options for a user to choose. For example, when the printing option is selected, the service will present to the user on the display choices such as duplex, portrait/landscape, multipage, number of prints and the like.

The subject application is directed to a system and method for providing a subscription service wherein a remote host enables the automatic receipt at a customer site of the most recent updates, patches, or fixes for services the customer site is running. The remote host uses a secured private port to transfer the updates to the subscribed systems. A remote host server searches an update database for updates of the services from a list configured by an administrator. The host server then downloads the updates and notifies the administrator that an update is available. An update script is subsequently generated, allowing the update to be pushed to a subscribing system. The host server the searches a listing of subscribing systems to determine which subscribing systems run a service for which an update is available. The host server, through a private port, uploads the content to the subscribing system automatically. The communication port is a secured port that will require authentication of the host server by the subscribing system prior to uploading.

A system and method for controlled monitoring of pending document processing operations is provided. Each document processing request received by a document processing device is assigned a job name, which is then encrypted using a random static encryption key, resulting in a job identification. A user then logs onto the document processing device to view pending jobs, which are displayed to the user by only job identification. Those jobs with which the user is associated are then decrypted by the document processing device, allowing the user to view job information including status and file name. The user is thereby also able to modify or delete those pending jobs with which the user is associated. Once the job queue is empty, the random static encryption key is deleted and a new key is generated when a document processing request is received into the empty queue.

According to the system and method, a user inputs a book identification into a peripheral device to cause the peripheral device to access an electronic version of the book. Upon so accessing, the peripheral is adapted to print the electronic version as specified. The present invention is directed to a system and method for propagation of security information for secure information exchange. Existing and new authentication information are gathered and combined into the same header. The present invention is directed to a system and method for the secure and correct deletion of data files from a data storage that bypasses the file system of an operating system. A secure erase service receives a secure erase request from a system interceptor component, which has intercepted a system call from an application. The system call interceptor component communicates with the secure erase service via an interprocess communication module. The secure erase service receives the secure erase request from the interprocess communication module and communicates the secure erase request to a secure erase library. Using the file information contained in the secure erase request, the secure erase library queries the file system of the data storage device to determine the location of data blocks containing the to be deleted data. Once, the location of the data blocks has been determined, the secure erase library then instructs the device driver, via a virtual file system, to overwrite the data blocks storing the electronic file a predetermined number of times.

The present invention is directed to a system and method for secure document transmission. The method begins by receiving first and second key portions into a data storage associated with a document processing device. The first key portion suitably includes data representing a user of the document processing device and the second key portion suitably includes data representing a source of at least one electronic document directed for transmission to the document processing device. Next, at least one encrypted electronic document is received into the document processing device, wherein the document includes the second key portion. The received electronic document is then decrypted using the second key portion and the first key portion, which was retrieved from the data storage. Following decryption, a document processing operation is commenced on the decrypted electronic document.

The present invention is directed to a system and method for secure transmission of electronic document data on a network. The method begins with the receipt of user identification data associated with the identity of a user of document processing devices on the associated network. A password key, composed of a first share and a second share, is then generated from the user identification data. The first share is then communicated to an associated storage area. Electronic document data is then received, and an encryption key is randomly generated. The electronic document data is then encrypted using the encryption key. The second share is then appended to the encrypted electronic document and the combined data is communicated to an associated document processing device.

A system utilizing a Bluetooth enabled smart card to authenticate a user and provide the user with access to a service. The Bluetooth smart card system is comprised of a server and a client. The server is the component that resides on the device that provides the service to the user. The server initializes the system to receive service requests. Once there is a request, the server establishes a communication channel and reads the user identification from the client. The server determines if it matches user identification from a database. If so, the server then determines if the requested service is supported and then performs the services. The server then determines if there is a need to charge for the service. The server would then get billing information from the card and adds the charge to the credit card of the user.

The present invention is directed to a system and method for adding data encryption services to a document processing device. The electronic document file is divided into blocks having a preselected length. An encryption key block containing first and second key portions, is then generated. The electronic data file is then encrypted using the first encryption key portion to form first level encryption data. The second level encryption data is then encrypted using the first key portion to form a final encrypted electronic document file.
