A medical instrument can be used with a surgical assistance system, display method and storage medium. The instrument includes a handling portion, an end portion, a tip for examining tissue, and a shaft interconnecting the handling portion and the end portion. The handling portion includes a reference system having a predefined position relative to the tip, so that a position and/or orientation of the tip can be determined. A distal portion of the shaft and/or the end portion has a capture unit having a sensor for creating an intracorporeal capture in a capture direction and a lamp for illuminating the intracorporeal capture. The intracorporeal capture can be computer readable. The capture unit can have a capture position and/or orientation with respect to the reference system and/or the tip. The medical instrument has an interface adapted to transmit data to transmit the intracorporeal capture to a control unit.

A computer-implemented technique for calculating a position of a surgical device relative to a patient region imaged by an imaging device is described. One of the surgical device and the imaging device has a predetermined first positional relationship to a marking, and a first camera having a field of view that includes the marking has a predetermined second positional relationship to the other device. The positional relationships may be stored as calibration data. A method realization of the technique comprises the steps of receiving, from the imaging device, intra-operatively taken first image data representative of the imaged patient region, receiving, from the first camera, intra-operatively taken second image data representative of the marking, and intra-operatively calculating, based on the first and second image data and the calibration data, the position of at least a part of the surgical device relative to the imaged patient region.

An orthopedic jig and pins therefore are disclosed that allow the pins to be pre-loaded into apertures through the jig before the jig is positioned at a desired location with respect to a bone during an orthopedic surgical procedure. At least one of the pin and/or jig includes a retention mechanism whereby the pin can be inserted into the bore and releasably restrained therein until the jig is place is the selected position and the pins driven into the bone.

A surgical trajectory guide to guide a medical device to a pivot point has a base that can be attached to a patient, an axial guide member connected with the base and aligned with a pivot point along a first axis in fixed relation to the base and a second axis perpendicular to the first axis. The guide member has a longitudinal axis, and is connected to the base such that the longitudinal axis always passes through the pivot point, and the axial guide member is prevented from rotating around the longitudinal axis. The guide further has at least one electronic angle sensor that can automatically sense a first angle of the axial guide member relative to the local gravity vector about the first axis and a second angle of the axial guide member relative to the local gravity vector about the second axis without having to level the base.

A navigation system includes a display monitor, a CPU, and a camera, wherein the camera is mounted to a back side of the display monitor to form a monitor unit. One or more reference units are placed on a body while acquiring an image data set, and are tracked during a surgical operation by the monitor unit to register and correlate a position of a visual image of an exterior surface of the body with the image data set including information concerning internal structures of the body. The image data set is displayed on the display monitor superimposed in registration over the visible image of the exterior of the body with an angle of view and aperture in accordance with the actual position of the camera, whereby the display monitor displays the internal structures corresponding to the line-of-sight of the camera and the observer.

System for and method of visualizing an interior of body

Three-dimensional image data generated for an object is representative of at least a portion of the object and of reference markings associated with the object. The reference markings have a known spatial relationship with a registration tracker tracked by a navigation system. Registration tracking data/object tracking data, each representative of at least one of a spatial location and a spatial orientation of the registration tracker/object tracker respectively, are provided. The object tracker has a fixed spatial relationship with the object. The relative position between the registration tracker and the object tracker is calculated from the registration tracking data and the object tracking data for a given point in time. Registered image data is generated representative of the location or the orientation of the object, taking into account the spatial relationship between the reference markings and the registration tracker, and the relative position between the registration tracker and the object tracker.

A method and system includes multiple displays that can be separately controlled by users who are part of a surgical team. The first display will include information to assist a first user through the steps of a surgical procedure and the second display will assist a second user though the steps taken by the second user to perform the surgical procedure.

An adapter can be easily used to assist a surgical navigation system to determine the effector axis or the effector plane of a surgical instrument. The adapter has a body with a geometrical feature, the geometrical feature has a known relation with a navigation tracker device that can be attached to the adapter. When the adapter is held against a surgical instrument in a non-fixed manner, the effector axis or the effector plane of the instrument can be tracked by the surgical navigation system. The method includes a calibration method to determine the known relation between the effector axis or the effector plane and the location of the navigation tracker.
