An apparatus including a sterilizable tray having a base and at least one fixture connected to the tray adapted for removably securing an implant insertion device to the tray. The tray can be free of a first wall portion for permitting the proximal end of an implantable device to axially align with the end of the implant insertion device for coupling to the implant insertion device and can be free of a second wall portion for permitting a tool to axially align with the end of the implant insertion device so as to threadedly couple the implant insertion device to the implantable device. Related methods and apparatus are provided.

Method for preparing implantable device for use

Orthopedic guide, and methods of using the guide, for alignment of bone under fluoroscopic imaging. In an exemplary embodiment, the guide may include a radiopaque rod, a radiolucent carrier, and a radiopaque indicator held by the carrier. The rod and the indicator may be parallel to the same plane, and may form an angle between one another of less than 90 degrees when projected orthogonally onto the plane. The rod may be configured to be aligned with an axis defined by one or more bones of the leg, and the indicator aligned with a joint of the leg, in an anterior-posterior, fluoroscopic view of the leg. The angle formed between the rod and the indicator may correspond to an anatomic orientation of the axis and the joint relative to one another in a frontal plane of the leg.

System and method for fixing a distal femur having a Hoffa fracture. The system may comprise a main plate, an outrigger plate, and a coupling member that mounts the outrigger plate to the main plate. In an exemplary method, an elongated body portion of the main plate may be secured to a shaft region of the distal femur, and a wider head portion of the main plate may be secured to an end region of the distal femur. The outrigger plate may be mounted on the head portion of the main plate, and an arm of the outrigger plate may be fastened to a condylar fragment of the femur with one or more fasteners, such that the outrigger plate spans and stabilizes the Hoffa fracture.

An intramedullary rod for use with a fastener to repair a femur includes an elongate nail extending along a longitudinal axis and having a stem and a head. The head is provided with an aperture extending along an axis at an angle to the longitudinal axis for receiving the fastener. A mechanism is carried by the head for pivoting the axis of the aperture from a first angled position relative to the head to a second angled position relative to the head. A method for using the rod and fastener is provided.

Apparatus and method for fixing a bone using a plate and a coupler that are connected to one another with flexible members. The plate may be configured to be attached to a shaft region of a bone. The coupler may be configured to be disposed on an end region of the bone, and may define a bore and an aperture. The flexible members may include a first flexible member and a second flexible member, each including a wire or cable. The first flexible member may be configured to extend from the plate, through the bore, and back to the plate. The second flexible member may be configured to extend from the plate to the coupler on a path that approaches the coupler transverse to a line that is parallel to the bore. The apparatus and method may be used to stabilize the greater trochanter of a femur.

Systems and methods for bone fixation using a plate straddled by a retainer. In an exemplary system, the plate may be an elongated plate configured to be disposed longitudinally on a bone. The retainer may have a body interconnecting a pair of mounting regions. The body may define a recess, and each mounting region may define a first aperture and a second aperture. The retainer may be configured to be mated with the plate to position a section of the plate in the recess such that the retainer straddles the plate. The first apertures may be configured to define through-axes that are tangential to the bone, to enable use with a line including wire and/or cable, and each second aperture may be configured to define a through-axis that extends through opposite sides of the bone while avoiding a medullary canal thereof, to enable use with a threaded fastener.

An intramedullary device to repair a bone in a mammalian body and comprising an elongate nail having a stem and a head. The head is provided with a transverse aperture adapted to receive a fastener. An adjustment mechanism is carried by the head for pivoting the fastener from a first angled position relative to the head to a second angled position relative to the head. A set screw is carried by the head. The distal end of the set screw is movable relative to the proximal end of the set screw from a first position for lockably engaging the fastener in the first angled position and a second position for lockably engaging the fastener in the second angled position. A sealing cap and an apparatus having a cap and a set screw are additionally provided.

An implant insertion device including a body having a first portion for coupling to a proximal end of an intramedullary rod and a second portion extending in a spaced position from the intramedullary rod in the vicinity of an aperture in a proximal end of the rod when the rod is coupled to the first portion. The second portion can include a targeting assembly having a passageway for receiving a guide sleeve and for pivoting the guide sleeve relative to the aperture through an angular range for inserting the fastener into the aperture of the rod. An implant insertion device for use with an implantable device is additionally provided.

An intramedullary rod for use in a mammalian body comprising an elongate nail having a stem and a head and a threaded element carried by the head and accessible at the proximal end for rotation relative to the head. A locking mechanism coupled to the threaded element and configured to preclude rotation of the threaded element relative to the head when the locking mechanism is in a first position and permit rotation of the threaded element relative to the head when the locking mechanism is in a second position.

A spine repair system and assembly are disclosed. The spine repair system includes a plate for use with a plurality of bone screws to treat a mammalian body having a plurality of vertebral portions in a spine. The plate has an elongate plate-like member having first and second end portions adapted for fastening respectively to a plurality of vertebral portions. First and second end portions are provided with a plurality of apertures for receipt of bone screws, including one or more apertures inclined relative to the plate-like member so as to enhance securement of the first and second end portions to the first and second vertebral portions when the bone screws are introduced through the screw holes into the vertebral portions. A method of operation and use are also disclosed.

Spine repair assembly

A posterior spinal fastener is disclosed for insertion into a vertebra of a mammalian body, the vertebra having posterior elements and a vertebral body. The fastener includes an elongate member adapted for insertion into the vertebra. The elongate body has an anterior portion and a posterior portion. The anterior portion is arcuate in shape for placement in the vertebral body. The posterior portion has a length so as to be accessible at the posterior elements of the vertebra when the anterior portion is disposed in the vertebral body. A method of use of the posterior spinal fastener is also disclosed, in which the posterior spinal fastener is introduced into the vertebra at the posterior elements and arcuately extended into the vertebral body.

A spinal connection assembly for use with a posterior spinal connector having a head and a groove adjacent the head for providing a neck and a connector element to treat a spine of a mammalian body is provided. The assembly includes a housing having first and second side portions and a top and a bottom. The first side portion is provided with a bottom-facing first opening adapted for receiving the posterior spinal connector. A capture mechanism is carried by the first side portion for engaging the head of the posterior spinal connector and extends at least partially into the groove so as to capture the head within the first opening. The second side portion is provided with a second opening. A securement mechanism is carried by the second side portion for capturing the connector element within the second opening.
