In a communications system having a first modem pool for communicating with a second modem pool, each modem pool including a plurality of modems and having at least one NEXT cancellation filter, a method for modem wake-up including the steps of, during a first time period, a) activating at least one of the modems in the first modem pool, b) deactivating at least one of the modems in the second modem pool, for at least one target modem in the first modem pool c) activating the first modem pool NEXT canceller filter, d) measuring the NEXT transfer function for the target modem and at least one other disturber modem in the first modem pool, and, during a second time period, e) activating at least one of the modems in the second modem pool, f) deactivating at least one of the modems in the first modem pool, for at least one target modem in the second modem pool g) activating the second modem pool NEXT canceller filter, and h) measuring the NEXT transfer function for the target modem and at least one other disturber modem in the second modem pool.

Modem wake-up in support of cross-talk cancellation in a modem pool environment

In a communications system having a modem pool including native modems operating at steady state, a method is provided for modem wake-up at steady-state including measuring modem performance, activating a foreign modem at substantially the foreign modem's maximum data rate and at a power level that is below the foreign modem's normal operational power level, allocating a NEXT cancellation filter as a probe filter, iteratively, until the foreign modem is operating at its normal operational power level, or the modem performance of any of the native modems has degraded subsequent to activating the foreign modem, canceling, using the probe filter, NEXT caused to a native modem by the foreign modem, measuring modem performance, and, if the modem performance of any of the native modems has not degraded, increasing the foreign modem's power level, and, if the modem performance of any of the native modems has degraded, deactivating the foreign modem.

Modem wake-up at steady state in a modem pool environment

In a communications system having a modem pool for communicating via a communications channel, the modem pool including a plurality of modems and having a plurality A of NEXT cancellation filters, a) measuring NEXT impairment caused to at least one target modem among the plurality of modems by at least one disturber modem among the plurality of modems, b) allocating P filters among the A filters as probe filters, where P&#x3e;=1, c) allocating at least one of the remaining A&#x2212;P filters among the filters to cancel NEXT from at least one disturber modem among the plurality of modems, and d) measuring, using at least one of the P probe filters, NEXT impairment caused to at least one target modem among the plurality of modems by at least one candidate disturber modem among the plurality of modems to which no A&#x2212;P filter is currently allocated.

Dynamic allocation of NEXT cancellation filters in a modem pool environment

A method for managing the bandwidth of a modem pool having at least two co-interfering modems, the method including measuring an SNR margin for at least two of the co-interfering modems, and adjusting the bit rate of each of the co-interfering modems such that the SNR margin of each of the co-interfering modems is between a first and a second predetermined threshold.

Bandwidth management for DSL modem pool

A high-speed receiver, adapted to receive signals over an input line in the presence of narrowband radio frequency interference (RFI). The receiver includes a RFI canceller module, which is coupled to receive samples of the interference from the input line. The module includes an adaptive bandpass filter, which is adapted to track a dominant frequency of the interference, and to generate a filtered output in a narrow frequency range centered on the dominant frequency. A corrector is coupled to receive the filtered output from the adaptive bandpass filter and to generate, responsive thereto, an estimate of the interference in the signals received by the receiver. A subtractor is adapted to subtract the estimate of the interference from the signals received by the receiver so as to generate a corrected output signal.
