A see-through type display apparatus includes an image projector configured to output image light, a waveguide configured to receive the image light output from the image projector and transmit the image light to a user's view, and a first lens having a negative refractive power and a second lens having a positive refractive power, which are arranged on both surfaces of the waveguide. Each of the first lens and the second lens includes one or more meta lenses and is configured to operate as a lens with almost no chromatic aberration, thereby implementing a thin optical system having good image quality.

See-through type display apparatus and electronic device including the same

A focusing device includes a substrate and a plurality of scatterers provided at both sides of the substrate. The scatterers on the both sides of the focusing device may correct geometric aberration, and thus, a field of view (FOV) of the focusing device may be widened.

Imaging apparatus and image sensor including the same

To overcome the problem of a diffractive surface having a large, and often excessively large, amount of chromatic aberration, an optical system can use multiple cascaded or sequential diffractive surfaces that, combined, have a reduced amount of chromatic aberration. The optical system can be designed such that all rays traversing the optical system and passing through the diffractive surfaces have an equal optical path length. In the design process, the sets of rays are identified, and the designs of the diffractive surfaces are selected to produce the angular deviations to produce the identified ray paths. In one example, an achromatic lens formed as two annular optical surfaces can receive a collimated incident beam, redirect rays helically at the first surface toward the second surface, and redirect the rays at the second surface toward a focal point. The azimuthal redirection can decrease with increasing distance away from a central axis.

Engineering chromatic response using cascaded metasurfaces

A meta-lens includes a first layer that is arranged on a substrate and that includes a plurality of first nanostructures and a second layer including a plurality of second nanostructures separately arranged from the first nanostructures. The meta-lens may focus light of a plurality of wavelengths or light of a wide wavelength bandwidth due to the arrangement of the nanostructures in a multilayer structure.

Multilayered meta lens and optical apparatus including the same

An image sensor includes a substrate, thin lenses disposed on a first surface of the substrate and configured to concentrate lights incident on the first surface, and light-sensing cells disposed on a second surface of the substrate, the second surface facing the first surface, and the light-sensing cells being configured to sense lights passing through the thin lenses, and generate electrical signals based on the sensed lights. A first thin lens and second thin lens of the thin lenses are configured to concentrate a first light and a second light, respectively, of the incident lights onto the light-sensing cells, the first light having a different wavelength than the second light.

Provided is a focusing device that includes a substrate and a plurality of scatterers provided at both sides of the substrate. The scatterers on the both sides of the focusing device may correct geometric aberration, and thus, a field of view (FOV) of the focusing device may be widened.

A spectrometer includes a substrate; a slit which is provided on the substrate and through which light is incident onto the substrate; a metasurface including nanostructures that is configured to reflect and focus the light incident thereon through the slit, at different angles based on respective wavelengths; and a sensor which is provided on one side of the substrate that is opposite to another side of the substrate at which the metasurface is disposed, and configured to receive the light from the metasurface.

Compact optical devices such as spectrometers are realized with metasurfaces within a dielectric medium confined by reflective surfaces. The metasurfaces control the phase profiles of the reflected electromagnetic waves within the device. In a compact spectrometer, the metasurfaces within the device separate the electromagnetic waves in different wavelengths. The metasurfaces are designed according to their phase profile by varying the size of the array of scatterers.
