Stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) as a supplement of cell culture media and the cell culture medium supplements comprising stabilized ACC are provided. In particular the stabilized ACC is useful for enhancing the growth of cell and tissue cultures, gametes and embryos in vitro.

A device for retaining a biological sample for performing a cryoprocedure on a biological sample having a tubular member having a lumen extending therein, the lumen configured to receive the biological sample. A retainer is couplable to a distal end of the tubular member, the retainer having a perforated member having at least one orifice, the at least one orifice having a dimension smaller than a dimension of the at least one biological sample to prevent exit of the biological sample from the tubular member, wherein the perforated element is configured to allow inflow of liquids to communicate with the lumen containing the biological sample.

Devices and methods for preparation of a biological sample for a cryoprocedure

Stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) for treatment of several neurological, muscular and infertility diseases and conditions is provided. In particular, the stabilized ACC may be used in the treatment of axonal defects and muscular dystrophy. In addition, provided are improved methods used in assistant reproductive technology. Examples of such methods are in vitro fertilization and improvement of sperm quality. The improved IVF method, for example, comprises addition of the stabilized ACC to the cell culture medium in which the stages of fertilization and embryo development occurs.

The method includes removing a whole organ and associated vasculature, cryo-preserving the whole organ, allowing a period of time to elapse, thawing the whole organ including vasculature and introducing the whole organ into a recipient so that the organ is supplied with blood by vasculature belonging to the recipient. Further disclosed is a method of preserving fertility of a patient undergoing a treatment expected to cause sterility. The method include removing a whole gonadal organ from the patient, cryo-preserving the whole gonadal organ, conducting the treatment and waiting for an effect thereof to subside, thawing the whole gonadal organ and introducing the whole gonadal organ where it is supplied with blood by the vasculature system of the patient. Further disclosed is a method of assuring a supply of viable gametes for future use, the method includes removing a whole gonadal organ from a patient, cryo-preserving the whole gonadal organ, waiting until viable gametes are desired by the patient, thawing the organ and introducing the gonadal organ into the patient so that it is supplied with blood by a vasculature system belonging to the patient.

A method and a device for improved freezing of biological containing living cells is disclosed. Directional cooling coupled with agitation, preferably rotation, of the vessel containing the biological sample allows for the freezing of large volume samples at much greater rates than before. Whether a sample is large or not, the greater thermal homogeneity during the freezing process as well as the resulting crystal morphology yield a frozen sample which is exceptionally suited for lyophilization.

A method and apparatus for monitoring biological samples. The apparatus comprises an incubator within which are mounted at least two CCD mini-cameras adapted for photomicroscopy as mini-photomicroscopes. The apparatus may be configured for time-lapse photomicroscopy, transmission photomicroscopy, reflection photomicroscopy, epifluorescence photomicroscopy, or infrared photomicroscopy. 3D images are acquired by focusing the mini-photomicroscopes on successive focal image planes in the biological samples. The mini-photomicroscopes may be focused on separate samples, on different portions of the same sample, or on the same portion of the same sample.

Method and apparatus for monitoring a biological sample

A device for controlled freezing and warming of a biological sample, and freezing and thawing protocols for which the device is well suited. The device establishes a laterally varying thermal gradient and provides a mechanism for moving the sample along the thermal gradient at a controlled rate of speed. The sample is moved along the thermal gradient at a rate of speed that provides a variable cooling rate or a variable warming rate in accordance with the appropriate protocol. The device also allows continuous seeding of the sample through the freezing process at the exact freezing point of the solution. Real time monitoring and video imaging of the freezing process enable fine tuning of the thermodynamic parameters for improved control.

A method for cryopreservation of biological samples. A cryogenic liquid such as liquid nitrogen is turned into a slush within a container such as a standard cryogenic storage vial by applying suction to create a partial vacuum above the liquid. The sample to be cooled is dropped into the slush and is subsequently stored in the container within which it was cooled.
