A flat flexible jumper is made from a preformed strip of conductive material which is cut to the desired jumper configuration and covered by a layer of insulation. The preformed strip is formed of a series of raised zones and flat zones. A stamping process is executed on the preformed strip utilizing a series of cutting dies to form the desired jumper configuration of the preformed conductive strip. A first die cuts away the material in the flat zone of the preformed strip leaving the raised zone remaining. A second die cuts away a portion of the flat zone and a portion of the raised zone providing a first transition region between the raised zone and the flat zone. A third die cuts away the material in the raised zone of the preformed conductor strip leaving the flat zone remaining. A fourth die cuts away a portion of the raised zone and a portion of the flat zone providing the second transition region between the flat zone and the raised zone. After the cutting process, the jumper is covered in insulation to prevent undesired contact between each of the conductors of the jumper. Any number of conventional insulation application methods, such as extruding insulation around the jumper or laminating two layers of insulation around the central portion of the jumper, can be used.

Integrated circuit electronic package

A connector assembly for electrically connecting an electronic apparatus to a printed circuit board includes a matable socket connector and header connector. The socket connector includes a lower housing which supports the electronic apparatus and which is capable of containing an insulative curable potting compound. A plurality of electrical contacts is supported by the lower housing in electrical engagement with the electronic apparatus. A cover is supportable over the lower housing for enclosing the housing. The electronic apparatus is supported within the socket connector in position so that the curable potting compound may completely surround the electronic apparatus providing an environmental seal. The socket connector is insertable into the header connector supported on the printed circuit to establish electrical connection therebetween.

A connector assembly for electrically connecting an electronic apparatus to a printed circuit board includes a matable socket connector and head connector. The socket connector includes a lower housing which supports the electronic apparatus and which is capable of containing an insulative curable potting compound. A plurality of electrical contacts is supported by the lower housing in electrical engagement with the electronic apparatus. A cover is supportable over the lower housing for enclosing the housing. The electronic apparatus is supported within the socket connector in position so that the curable potting compound may completely surround the electronic apparatus providing an environmental seal. The socket connector is insertable into the header connector supported on the printed circuit to establish electrical connection therebetween.

An electrical connector having stress-free resiliently deformable contacts is shown. The connector includes a plurality of elongate contacts having first and second opposed ends. Movement is permitted between respective ends by incorporating a plurality of independently resiliently deformable transition regions in the contacts between the ends thereof. These transition regions permit the contacts to be movable in three dimensions without placing undue stress on either the contact or the fixed terminal ends.

A keying system, especially for use with intermateable electrical connector assemblies is disclosed. An electrical connector assembly includes first and second interconnectable electrical connectors. The first connector includes a first keying means formed into a raised pattern of letters identifying a particular color. The mating second connector is colored the particular color and includes a pattern of cavities corresponding to the pattern of letters. The second connector accommodates the first connector in singular unique orientation, with the color of the second connector easily visually identifying the mateability of the first connector thereto.

Components having means for keyed interconnectability

An electrical connection arrangement includes a printed circuit board comprising a substrate and a given number of electrically conductive traces disposed on a surface thereof. Each trace has an opening therethrough for receiving a contact and the openings are in a predetermined array. An electrically insulative body supports all but one of such contacts with individual opposite ends thereof extending outwardly of the body. An electrically conductive metallic housing integrally defines the other of such contacts with opposite ends extending outwardly thereof and has a passage extending therethrough in which the electrically insulative body is seated. All of the contacts are individually resident in distinct ones of such trace openings and are electrically connected to said traces and their opposite ends may terminate to associated connectors for terminating flat cable to the printed circuit board. The housing has an integral flange which is in electrical contact with its integral contact, whereby the circuitry may be connected to structure parent to the housing without need for a conductive strap.

A method and apparatus for sealing exposed portions of an electrical connector is disclosed. A sealing member is formed directly onto the housing of the electrical connector to seal the exposed portions of the electrical contacts therein. The sealing member engages the housing in a non-adhered relation so as to admit removal of the sealing member from the housing. The sealing member is useful to seal the electrical contact from exposure to a protective coating process.

Covering for an electrical connector

A flat multiconductor jumper cable comprises a plurality of elongate substantially parallel and transversely spaced conductors surrounded by a casing of insulation. At one or both ends of the jumper cable, exposed portions of the conductors are formed in a curved clipped portion for solder connection to an integrated circuit substrate. The conductors are preferably formed of a soft non-resilient material such as copper and the clip portion is provided to have a substantially circular cross-section. The clip portion, formed in a generally U-shaped configuration defines a pocket for receipt therein of the edge of a substrate having conductive pads on opposing surfaces. Upon soldering the clip portion to the conductive pads, solder fillets are formed in such a manner as to provide an enhanced electrical and mechanical joint.

A high density electrical connector is shown in which discrete dielectric wafers mount several contact elements within grooves on a first surface of the wafer while mounting a single ground plane within a recess on a second surface. This configuration, when the wafers are stacked side-by-side, forms the contacts in a stripline connection in which the impedance of each contact may be controlled. The wafers may be inserted into slots within a housing to form a high density connector for joining a daughter board to a mother board.

An electrical connecting device for disengageable connection to conductors of an electric component comprises an integrated circuit (IC) package having a plurality of leads in dual-in-line configuration. A socket included in such device comprises an insulative housing and first and second pluralities of contacts supported thereon arranged in laterally spaced, longitudinally corresponding positions. Each of the contacts has a first end portion selectively plated, with gold for example, for detachable connection to a conductor of the electric component. A second end of the contacts is selectively tin-plated and soldered to the leads of the IC package. The second end portion of each of the contacts is formed to have thereon at least two laterally spaced contact members, thereby providing for selective securement thereto of IC packages having different laterally spaced leads.

An electronic package is disclosed including a socket assembly for connecting an electronic component to a circuit board. A header is secured to the circuit board, and receives the socket assembly which is connected to the header along a direction parallel to the plane of the circuit board. The socket assembly includes a housing and tray. The tray which accommodates the electronic component, is slidably inserted into the housing.

A connector for use in environments promotive of galvanic action and corrosion includes a housing supporting a plurality of contacts extending through a resilient member nestably seated in the housing and through a housing closure insert nestably seated in the resilient member. Multiple sealing interfaces are provided by the resilient member under force improsed thereon in assembly of the connector components.

A connector of zero insertion force type includes a cam movable responsively to operator input to open contact elements for insertion therein of terminal pins of an electronic package, the contact elements being so configured and supported as to impart reverse movement to the cam upon discontinuance of the operator input and to resiliently engage the terminal pins.

A dual-in-line package assembly for interconnection with a printed circuit board includes a base having a plurality of free-standing contacts and a DIP carrier having channels extending therethrough for jointly receiving DIP lead and base contacts and for biasing resililent portions of the base contacts upon the DIP leads interiorly of the carrier. The channels of carriers stacked in the assembly have common base contacts passing therethrough in registry with a lead of each stacked package.
