A switch is shown mounted inside the housing of an automatic transmission of a motor vehicle with a sliding movable electrical contact coupled to the manual valve of the transmission to provide an indication of the position of the manual gear selector. An electrical resistive network is interconnected with stationary contact segments to provide electronic signals to a powertrain electronic controller of the automobile corresponding to the linear position of the manual valve. Pressure switches are coupled to selected hydraulic circuits and electrically interconnected to the resistive network.

Automobile transmission mode sensing apparatus

A high reliability low cost connector has flat retainers blanked from an electrically conductive sheet metal and inserted into an opening in an electrically insulating body. Each retainer has a post at one end extending from an opening at one side of the body and has a pair of integral wings spaced from each other in a plane at its opposite end disposed in the opening at an opposite side of the body. Spring clips are blanked and formed from an electrically conductive sheet metal spring material and are inserted into the body openings so loop portions of the clips fit between the pairs of retainer wings in each opening and are biased into resilient electrical engagement with the retainer wings. Each clip preferably has two pairs of juxtaposed spring leaves integral with the loop spaced at 90.degree. relative to each other around a common axis to grip a terminal inserted between the spring leaves. The loops are also formed with interruptions in each loop in a common location between two adjacent spring leads. The sheet metal retainers and clips are inserted into the body openings while suspended from support strips left during the blanking steps and are then separated from the support strips. In that way the retainers and clips have predetermined uniform orientations in the openings.

Connector apparatus

A keyboard unit is shown having a substrate in which portions of the substrate are physically displaced to provide a cavity, an embossment and a plurality of protuberances for each switching station. The embossment, in registry with a button contact area, projects upwardly from the floor of the cavity a selected distance with a discontinuous annulus contact area extending around its respective cavity in generally the same plane as that in which the top surface of the substrate lies. The cavity includes a channel shaped portion extending through the discontinued portion of the discontinuous annulus. The protuberances project upwardly from the general plane of the substrate's top surface and serve to laterally locate a snap-acting disc over the contact areas. The disc may be selectively coated with highly electrically conductive material to optimize electrical switching. A piece of flexible, electrically insulative sheet may be placed over the unit to seal it from the environment.

Connector and method of making

A delayed-action thermal relay, particularly for starting single-phase induction motors, comprises a case of insulating material, a first, a second, and a third terminal within the case, an actuator unit consisting of a heating element of a material with positive temperature coefficient and of a bimetal member, and first and second contacts that are normally closed carried by the bimetal and by the third terminal respectively, said actuator unit being forcibly and adjustably inserted between the first and second terminals.

Delayed-action thermal relay

An electric switch or commutator actuated by bimetals for one or several temperatures of response comprises a cap support for one or several bimetallic disks of a well known type which cooperates with a base made of one piece, the base comprising a substantially cylindrical part disposed to join with the cap support for mounting the bimetallic disks and having rivets extending through the cylindrical base part into an integral part of the base which mounts fixed and movable contacts of the switch and which is disposed to support also the connecting terminals and a covering and protecting element with snap-action insertion.

Electric switches actuated by bimetals for one or several temperatures

An improved electromagnetic relay having a wafer of material with positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTC) mounted inside the relay combines a sturdy construction with low manufacturing costs adapting the relay for use as a starting relay for electric motors of compressors. For this purpose, the magnetic members of the relay are incorporated in the electrical relay circuit and are provided with attachments for plug-on connections of the relay to circuit pins of motor-compressor units.

A method of assembling a motor starting relay whereby a series of open-ended cases are advanced in sequence to an assembly station, a pair of contacts which are assembled by providing two lines of terminals and two lines of springs and having each head spring and head terminal become an integral unit, are placed into the case and after a resistor wafer is placed between the parallel placed contacts, lids are placed on each housing.

Method of assembling a motor starting relay

A motor starting relay particularly adapted for use in starting single phase asynchronous motors comprises a resistor element of positive temperature coefficient of resistivity which is compactly arranged within a housing and engaged by electrical contact and terminals means of particular structure and of a material of relatively high thermal resistance in a novel way such that power dissipation or loss by the resistor is reduced to a very low level after it has performed its motor starting function but so that, at the same time, the resistor is adapted to cool more rapidly after interruption of motor operation to permit prompt motor restarting.
