The switching system comprises a routing device having selection modules each having one input and a plurality of outputs adapted to switch spectral channels received selectively to respective outputs as a function of a command. The routing device comprises a first stage comprising a plurality of modules whose inputs constitute the input ports of the device, a second stage comprising at least one first selection module whose outputs constitute the output ports of the device, and an intermediate stage for coupling the input of the first selection module of the second stage both to a first output of a first selection module of the first stage and to a first output of a second selection module of the first stage. The switching system applies to interconnection panels in switching nodes for optical networks.

Metropolitan area type optical telecommunications network comprising a ring type core

An optical packet node for receiving and transmitting optical packets is disclosed. A multiwavelength band splitting device splits received optical packets transmitted via multiwavelength bands into at least three groups, each group including one multiwavelength band. A multiwavelength band combining device combine the three groups of multiwavelength bands. At least two optical packet add drop multiplexers are placed between the multiwavelength band splitting device and the multiwavelength band combining device. Each optical packet add drop multiplexer adds and drops at least one individual wavelength to a respective multiwavelength band group. A load balancing stage is connected to the optical packet add drop multiplexers to provide an interconnection between at least two wavelength bands.

Packets conveying data are received by a router via input ports which impose on them optical carrier waves whose wavelengths correspond to the ports. Respective time-delays are applied to the packets and they are broadcast to spatial selectors that transmit them to spectral selectors. Amplifiers are distributed over the paths of the packets and the paths are organized in such a manner as to limit the number of semiconductor optical switches in the selectors and to minimize noise and optical crosstalk affecting the packets.

Packet router for use in optical transmission networks

A method for synchronizing optical signals conducted via different optical waveguides to an optical network node, wherein the variations in propagation time of the optical signals are compensated by adjustable optical delay circuits of a synchronizing device. To set a new delay for one of the optical waveguides, one of the adjustable delay circuits, already switched into the passive state, is set at the desired delay. This delay circuit is then switched into the active state by means of a high-speed optical switch, and the previously active delay circuit is switched into a passive state.

A device for erasing overhead modulation of an optical signal, wherein said optical signal is injected into an optical device able to modulate the optical signal (for example a semi-conductor optical amplifier driver by a bias control) and for which one an automatic gain control does not need to detect the residual overhead modulation, is characterised in that said bias control means applies to said amplifier a compensation voltage presenting a modulation out of phase with respect to said overhead modulation, and in that modulation index of said compensation voltage is (substantially) proportional to the modulation index of said optical signal.

A hybrid spatial and wavelength selector for optical switching matrices includes a guide system defining paths between input ports receiving light waves having diverse wavelengths and at least one output port. Gates on the paths are each opened or closed so that the light waves reaching the output port via the gates which are open are selected according to the input ports which received them and according to their wavelength. The guide system is situated only between the optical gates and the output port and includes a wavelength separation system assigning some of the paths to the light waves according to their wavelength. The selector has applications in fiber optic telecommunication networks.

Hybrid spatial and wavelength selector and optical switching matrix including it

A selection module receives an upstream multiplex and selectively diverts at least one channel of the multiplex to a drop port. A switching unit directs the channel concerned to an add port during certain periods in order to reinsert it into a downstream multiplex including at least one other channel of the upstream multiplex. An amplifier has sufficient gain to give rise to a circulating wave during the aforementioned periods in a closed loop including the two ports and the unit. This wave balances the downstream multiplex. Applications include fiber optic telecommunication networks.

Channel add and drop method and system for wavelength-division multiplex optical transmission

The invention relates to an optical transmission system comprising a transmission line which includes at least one optical fiber amplifier. According to the invention, a stabilized gain optical amplifier is coupled to the input of the line, said stabilized gain amplifier including a local oscillator suitable for emitting an auxiliary compensation wave at a wavelength .lambda.loc which lies in the gain band of each optical fiber amplifier of the line. Provision is also made to modulate the pumping current of said stabilized gain amplifier to convey service information. The invention is applicable to optical transmission.

Optical transmission system with dynamic compensation of the power

To perform selective dropping and adding of channels of wavelength multiplexes without interposing active elements in the main transmission path, the apparatus comprises add-and-drop modules, each of which includes at least one stop filter provided with two opposite ports. An optical switch provided with a drop outlet is provided with drop inlets and with add outlets associated with the modules, and respectively coupled to the opposite ports of the filters. For each module, the switch is organized for selectively coupling one of its drop inlets to one of its add outlets and/or to the drop outlet.

The invention relates to a wavelength converter including an interferometer structure for delivering an output optical signal, in which converter a first branch contains a first semiconductor optical amplifier and a second branch contains a second semiconductor optical amplifier, the amplifiers being coupled to a common probe laser, and said first amplifier being organized to receive a modulating input signal, said converter including regulator means for acting on the total optical power delivered to said amplifier in response to a negative feedback signal representative of the extinction ratio of the output signal. The invention is applicable to making routing systems using wavelength-division multiplexing.

Wavelength converter for binary optical signals

To optimize the amplification in a device for extracting channels from a wavelength division multiplex, the following steps are carried out in succession: a first amplification step with a first gain, a wavelength selection step, and a second amplification step with a second gain. The first and second gains respectively confer upon the output optical signal a fixed signal to noise ratio and a particular optical power. Applications include optical transmission networks.
