A surgical instrument includes an end effector assembly and a deployment mechanism for deploying a proximal hub associated with an energizable member between proximal and distal positions. The deployment mechanism includes a rotatable shaft, a cord including a proximal end engaged to the rotatable shaft and a distal end engaged to the proximal hub, a biasing member positioned to bias the proximal hub towards the distal position, and a gear assembly operably coupled to the rotatable shaft. The gear assembly is configured to move the proximal hub from the distal position to the proximal position against the bias of the biasing member by rotating the rotatable shaft relative to the cord to at least partially wind-up the cord about the rotatable shaft.

Deployment mechanism for surgical instruments

A deployment mechanism for selectively deploying and retracting an energizable member and/an insulative member relative to an end effector assembly of a surgical instrument includes one or more actuators, a clutch assembly, and a drive assembly. The clutch assembly is configured to couple to the actuator(s) to provide rotational motion in the first direction in response to such rotation of the actuator(s) and to decouple from the actuator(s) in response to rotation thereof in the second direction. The drive assembly is operably coupled to the clutch assembly and is configured to convert the rotational motion provided by the clutch assembly into longitudinal motion to translate the energizable member and/or insulative member from a storage position to a deployed position and to translate the energizable member and/or the insulative member from the deployed position back to the storage position.

Deployment mechanisms for surgical instruments

A surgical instrument includes a housing, an energizable member, a powered deployment assembly, and a cable assembly. The energizable member is configured to supply electrosurgical energy to tissue, and is movable between a storage position and a deployed position. The powered deployment assembly is configured to selectively move the energizable member between the storage position and the deployed position. The cable assembly having a cable coupled to the housing at a first end and having a plug coupled to the cable at a second, opposite end. The cable housing one or more first wires for selectively providing electrosurgical energy to the energizable member and one or more second wires for selectively providing power to the powered deployment assembly. The plug is configured to house a battery therein for powering the powered deployment assembly via the one or more second wires.

The present disclosure is directed to a forceps having an end effector assembly including first and second jaw members. At least one of the jaw members is movable relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue therebetween. Each jaw member includes an electrically-conductive tissue-contacting surface adapted to connect to a source of energy to treat tissue grasped between the jaw members. A suction system is disposed proximate the first and second jaw members and is configured to apply suction to a surgical site upon activation thereof.

A method of treating tissue includes extending a distal tip of an electrode of a surgical instrument from a body of the surgical instrument to expose the distal tip by sliding the electrode along a longitudinal axis defined by the body, delivering energy from the distal tip to tissue, and applying suction adjacent the distal end of the body with a suction pipe of the surgical instrument. The distal tip of the electrode may include a collapsible portion. Extending the distal tip of the electrode may include moving the collapsible portion to extend beyond an outer radial dimension of a nose of the surgical instrument.

A guide apparatus for facilitating formation of a stoma includes a guide having an outer flange segment arranged about a central longitudinal axis and an insert segment. The flange segment is configured for engaging end margins of a body vessel extending through an opening in skin of a subject, and defines a plurality of apertures. The insert segment extends from the outer flange segment along the longitudinal axis. The insert segment is configured for at least partial positioning within the body vessel to maintain the patency of the body vessel. The guide apparatus further includes a plurality of fasteners for insertion within respective apertures of the flange segment of the guide. The fasteners are configured for penetrating the end margins of the body vessel extending through the opening in the skin to attach the end margins to the skin to thereby create a stoma.

Apparatus and associated methodologies for creating a stoma

A surgical instrument includes a housing, an energizable member, a proximal hub, and a deployment mechanism. The energizable member is movable between a storage position and a deployed position. The proximal hub is disposed within the housing, coupled to the energizable member, and translatable relative to the housing along a translation axis to deploy the energizable member. The deployment mechanism is configured to selectively translate the proximal hub and includes an actuator movable along a surface of the housing that extends in non-parallel orientation relative to the translation axis. The actuator is operably coupled to the proximal hub and is movable along the surface of the housing in non-parallel orientation relative to the translation axis between a proximal position and a distal position to translate the proximal hub along the translation axis and move the energizable member between the storage position and the deployed position.

A surgical instrument includes a stationary shaft defining a conduit and a movable shaft slidably disposed therein. A surgical tool extends distally from the movable shaft and a cup extends distally from the stationary shaft. The cup includes a body defining one or more channels, an annular rim disposed at the distal end portion thereof and defining a plurality of apertures each in fluid communication with one of the channels, and a cap disposed at the proximal end portion of the body and defining a lumen fluidly coupling the one or more channels with the conduit. A central aperture of the cap slidably receives the surgical tool and/or the movable shaft as the movable shaft slides from a retracted position, wherein the surgical tool is disposed proximally of the distal end portion of the cup, and an extended position, wherein the surgical tool extends through and distally from the cup.

Surgical instruments for engaging tissue to stabilize tissue and facilitate tissue manipulation

A surgical instrument includes a first shaft, a second shaft, and a hinge. The first shaft includes a proximal handle and a distal jaw member. The second shaft includes a first segment that has a proximal handle and a second segment that has a distal jaw member. One of the first and second shafts is pivotal relative to the other to pivot the jaw members between an open configuration where the jaw members are spaced relative to one another and an activatable configuration where the jaw members are closer to one another and suitable for applying electrosurgical energy to tissue disposed therebetween. The hinge couples the first and second segments to one another. The first and second segments have a straight configuration where the first and second segments align with a longitudinal axis and a pivoted configuration where the second segment is disposed at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis.

An elongated electrode includes a proximal conductor, a tubular member, and a treatment portion. The tubular member defines a channel therethrough and has proximal and distal end portions. The proximal end portion receives the proximal conductor within a portion of the channel and defines a hole through an inner and outer surface of the tubular member in fluid communication with the channel. The treatment portion is coupled to the distal end portion of the tubular member and includes a base and an arm extending distally from the base. The base defines a port in fluid communication with the channel of the tubular member. The arm is in electrical communication with the proximal conductor and is configured to deliver electrosurgical energy to tissue.
