Embodiments herein relate to data storage and retrieval using information-encoding polymers encapsulated in droplets stored in a microfluidic droplet storage array. In various embodiments, a data storage apparatus may include a microfluidic droplet storage array to store one or more droplets containing one or more information-encoding polymer molecules in one or more droplet storage locations, and an interface coupled with the microfluidic droplet storage array to receive the one or more droplets from a data writer that writes the one or more droplets into the microfluidic droplet storage array. Other embodiments may be described and/or claimed.

Microfluidic information-encoding polymer data storage

A periodic signal generator includes a resonant LC tank circuit that generates a periodic reference signal at a first frequency at a differential output thereof. A temperature-responsive frequency compensation module is electrically coupled to the differential output of the resonant LC tank circuit. This module includes a temperature dependent voltage control module that generates a temperature dependent control voltage and an array of switchable capacitive modules that is electrically coupled to a first node of the differential output of the resonant LC tank circuit and responsive to the temperature dependent control voltage and a plurality of switching coefficients. The array of switchable capacitive modules includes a fixed capacitor having a first terminal electrically coupled to the first node and a voltage-controlled variable capacitor having a first terminal electrically coupled to the first node.

Monolithic clock generator and timing/frequency reference

In various embodiments, the invention provides a clock generator and/or a timing and frequency reference, with multiple operating modes, such power conservation, clock, reference, and pulsed modes. The various apparatus embodiments include a resonator adapted to provide a first signal having a resonant frequency; an amplifier; a temperature compensator adapted to modify the resonant frequency in response to temperature; and a process variation compensator adapted to modify the resonant frequency in response to fabrication process variation. In addition, the various embodiments may also include a frequency divider adapted to divide the first signal having the resonant frequency into a plurality of second signals having a corresponding plurality of frequencies substantially equal to or lower than the resonant frequency; and a frequency selector adapted to provide an output signal from the plurality of second signals. The output signal may be provided in any of various forms, such as differential or single-ended, and substantially square-wave or sinusoidal.

Disclosed herein is a method of collecting suspensions in a liquid film including the steps of developing a variation in surface tension at a gas-liquid interface of the liquid film to generate a circulating flow pattern within the liquid film, and scanning the liquid film with the circulating flow pattern for entrapment of the suspensions in the flow pattern by re-directing the variation in the surface tension across the gas-liquid interface of the liquid film.

Liquid flow actuation and suspension manipulation using surface tension gradients

Exemplary embodiments of the invention provide a system, method and apparatus for frequency calibration of a free-running, harmonic oscillator. A reference oscillator provides a reference frequency. An exemplary system comprises the harmonic oscillator, a frequency divider, a comparator, and a reactance modulator. The oscillator comprises a plurality of switchable reactance modules and a coefficient register, and provides an oscillation signal having an oscillation frequency. The frequency divider provides an output frequency as a fraction of the oscillation frequency. The comparator compares the output and reference frequencies and provides a comparison signal when the output frequency is not substantially equal to the reference frequency. The reactance modulator determines and provides to the coefficient register a first plurality of coefficients to control switching of a first subset of the reactance modules to increase the reactance of the oscillator when the output frequency is greater than the reference frequency, and a second plurality of coefficients to control switching of a second subset of the reactance modules to decrease the reactance of the oscillator when the output frequency is less than the reference frequency.

Frequency calibration for a monolithic clock generator and timing/frequency reference

A relatively simple and inexpensive micromachined arrayed thermal probe apparatus, system for thermal scanning a sample in a contact mode and cantilevered reference probe for use therein can be used for a variety of microscopy and microcalorimetry applications ranging from the monitoring of processes in semiconductor manufacturing to the characterization of nano-scale materials, imaging of biological cells, and even data storage. Probes are designed to have very high thermal isolation and high mechanical compliance, providing advantages in both performance and ease of operation. In particular, an array of probes can be used for high throughput contact mode scanning of soft samples without mechanical feedback, and can, therefore, be used in wide arrays for high-speed measurements over large sample surfaces. The probes are preferably manufactured by a photolithographic fabrication process, which permits large numbers of probes to be made in a uniform and reproducible manner at low cost.
