A device specific key is generated within an electronic device by providing a challenge to a physically unclonable function (PUF) structure integrated within the electronic device, where the PUF structure outputs a specific response based upon a specific challenge provided to the PUF structure. The PUF response is provided to a cryptographic module integrated within the electronic device, and a device specific key is generated by the cryptographic module utilizing a cryptographic key generation algorithm. The device specific key is generated based upon a combination of input data including the PUF response and data that is specific to the electronic device.

An Interchangeable Standard Port or Stack Port (ISPSP) uses a standard physical connector such as an RJ-45 or SFP. The ISPSP automatically detects whether it is connected to a standard port, such as a 1000BaseT, or whether it is connected to another ISPSP stacking port. This automatic detection can be done through hardware or software. Once the auto-detection is complete the routing platform will automatically configure the ISPSP port for standard 1 Gbps bit rate and framing, or for stacking, e.g., 2.5 Gbps bit rate, and framing.

Interchangeable standard port or stack port

A router in a network comprises an interface system for receiving packets and has a plurality of channels and a plurality of framing service engines. The router is configured to assign the channels to individual framing service engines for framing services. The router has a channel manager for performing the assignments, and the channel manager is configured to receive and use data about the framing service engines. The router further comprises a framing memory for buffering communication between the interface system and the plurality of framing service engines. At least one framing service engine is configured to frame packets and at least one framing service engine is configured to deframe packets, and the framing service engines may be configured to operate on AHDLC packets. The router can be used with an interface system that comprises a plurality of network interfaces terminating a plurality of point to point links.

Generalized asynchronous HDLC services

A system for electric power demand monitoring and control includes one or more data distribution networks interconnecting intelligent utility units located at customer homes with a host computer located in the utility company offices. Each intelligent utility unit is associated with a customer home for connecting and disconnecting a power service meter, monitoring customer demand, and controlling power to selected units. A network within the home interconnects each intelligent utility unit with power consuming units for providing data on power usage and power control. A data distribution network interconnects the plurality of intelligent utility units to the host computer as a head end unit, the data distribution network providing downstream communication channels from the host computer to the plurality of intelligent utility units and upstream communication channels from the plurality of intelligent utility units to the host computer. The communication channels are organized as frequency division multiplex channels in a frequency spectrum. A plurality of distribution networks can be provided for a larger utility environment with each distribution network associated with a power substation and customers served by the power substation.

A telecommunication bridge system uses synchronized arbitration in a portion of a frame of a Radio Frequency (RF) subsystem and is transparent to Ethernet layer protocols and Ethernet-type packets in order to increase bandwidth utilization and effectively extend Ethernet networks to metropolitan-area-wide application. The telecommunication bridge system comprises an enhanced Ethernet network interface subsystem coupled to a conventional Ethernet medium and a control subsystem including an RF modem, in turn coupled to a frame synchronized RF medium in a metropolitan-sized network. On one side the control subsystem emulates all Ethernet layer protocols and on the other side conducts a prioritized arbitration scheme during only a portion of a time division multiplexed frame, the remainder of the frame for carrying a payload of unmodified packets to other bridges. Included in the controller subsystem is a two-way Manchester/NRZ Code converter, its own intelligence and packet buffering using a microprocessor and random access memory.

Ethernet extender

An apparatus and method for extending the range of a digital data network by enhancing skew control. The apparatus is a circuit for use in a network interface unit. The apparatus measures the distance of the network interface unit from the head-end retransmission unit of the network by transmitting a series of signal packets on the network and counting the time it takes for the packets to be received back at the interface unit. All transmissions on the network take place with reference to a timing mark transmitted by the head-end unit at a regular interval. The apparatus sends the first in the series of signal packets at a pre-determined pre-skew interval before the timing mark. The apparatus counts the number of clock cycles after the timing mark before the signal packet is received back at the network interface unit. If the signal packet is not received back at the network unit within a pre-determined number of clock cycles, the apparatus sends a new signal packet at a new, larger pre-skew interval before the timing mark and again counts the clock cycles after the timing mark. This process is repeated until a signal packet is successfully received back at the network interface unit. Once a signal packet is successfully received back at the network interface unit, the pre-skew value at which the packet was sent and the value of the number of clock cycles after the timing mark at which the packet was received back is stored in the interface unit and all subsequent transmissions by that unit on the network are done at an interval before the timing mark defined by the stored skew value.
