For controlling 1and 2torsion characteristics in a disk drive suspension, a disk drive suspension is provided having a beam portion with edge rails extending along its edge regions, the edge rails are locally varied substantially identically between lesser and greater heights along their lengths, the beam portion having a central region increasingly extending above or below the plane of excitation in inverse response to the edge rails increasingly or decreasingly extending above the plane of excitation. The inverse relation of the beam portion central region and the rail heights relative to the plane of excitation tends to offset in at least part changes in the balance of the suspension upper and lower inertia components from changes in the geometry of said suspension.

A load beam for a disk drive suspension in which the radius of the perimeter transition between the load beam portion and the load beam spring portion is increased to ensure the stress encountered when the load beam is bent from its normal range, for installation into a disk drive, for example, from a previously typical 0.002 inch to 0.010 inch, is distributed sufficiently that the load beam spring portion is subject to only elastic, not plastic deformation. Thus, the gram loads exerted by the load beam spring portion are reliably consistent.

The interconnect assembly has an insulative layer, a read pair of forward and return path conductive traces, a write pair of forward and return path conductive traces that are supported by the insulative layer, preferably in offset relation across the insulative layer, and a metal layer for grounding and mounted on the insulative plastic layer in fixed spaced relation to the conductive traces to be between the interconnect assembly and the load beam. The metal layer shields the conductive traces from variations in impedance occasioned by varying distances between said electrical interconnect and said load beam.

A disk drive suspension has a load beam with a base portion, a spring portion and a rigid portion to carry a flexure and slider in operative association with a disk. The spring portion is normally bendable between the base portion and the rigid portion. Welding of the spring portion to the base portion and the rigid portion tends to raise the temperature of the adjacent parts of the spring portion to temperatures above their annealed temperature and there is a loss of temper and thus spring properties in these adjacent parts. The non-railed region of the spring portion remains bendable and is far enough away from welding heat that it retains its temper and spring properties.
