The invention provides antisense antiviral compounds and methods of their use in inhibition of growth of viruses of the picornavirus, calicivirus, togavirus and flavivirus families, as in treatment of a viral infection. The antisense antiviral compounds have morpholino subunits linked by uncharged phosphorodiamidate linkages interspersed with cationic phosphorodiamidate linkages.

Antisense antiviral agent and method for treating ssRNA viral infection

The invention provides antisense antiviral compounds and methods of their use in inhibition of growth of viruses of the picornavirus, calicivirus, togavirus and flavivirus families, as in treatment of a viral infection. The antisense antiviral compounds are substantially uncharged oligomers having a targeting base sequence that is substantially complementary to a viral target sequence which spans the AUG start site of the first open reading frame of the viral genome.

Caliciviruses are herein recognized as potentially important human pathogens, infecting a large percentage (18%) of a sampled human population. A new calicivirus isolate called &ldquo;San Miguel sea lion virus 5 serotype -1&rdquo; (SMSV-5 Hom-1) is also disclosed. Compositions and methods are disclosed that allow diagnosis, prevention and treatment of calicivirus (including SMSV-5 Hom-1) infection in humans.

Diagnosis, prevention and treatment of calicivirus infection in humans

Apparatus worn about the chest of a user monitors the breathing pattern and upon occurrence of an abnormal breathing pattern stimulates the respiratory reflexes to urge resumption of the normal breathing patterns. Alarms may be actuated upon detection of an abnormal breathing pattern.
