A mattress is disclosed that includes a sleeping side, a cushioning layer, an inner support compartment, and a fire-containing compartment disposed between the sleeping side and the inner support compartment. The fire-containing compartment includes first and second layers of fire-resistant material selected from the group consisting of a barrier sheet, a high loft batt, and a fire-resistant chemical. The cushioning layer is disposed between the first and second layers of fire-resistant material.

Fire-resistant mattress having combustible material compartmentalized between fire-resistant layers

A fire-retardant mattress having at least one sleeping side is disclosed that has an inner support compartment with a generally parallelepiped shape with a top side opposite the sleeping side and a fire-containing compartment covering the top side of the inner support compartment and located between the sleeping side and the inner support compartment. The fire-containing compartment includes a first fire-resistant layer consisting essentially of natural fibers, the first fire-resistant layer being in direct contact with the top side of the inner support compartment, a second fire-resistant layer consisting essentially of natural fibers, the second fire-resistant layer located separate from the first self supporting layer of fire-resistant material, and a plurality of combustible cushioning layers positioned between the first and second fire-resistant layers. The first and second fire-resistant layers form a compartment around the plurality of combustible cushioning layers to delay combustion of the fire-retardant mattress from fully catching fire.

A mattress is disclosed that includes a sleeping side, a cushioning layer, an inner support compartment, and a fire-containing compartment disposed between the sleeping side and the inner support compartment and including first and second layers of fire-resistant material. The cushioning layer is disposed between the first and second layers of fire-resistant material.

An innerspring mattress having an edge support insert that overlaps the upper and lower border wires of the mattress. The edge support insert has a C-shaped cross-section or the cross-section may gradually thicken from interior corners of the &ldquo;C&rdquo; toward the center forming a putative E-shaped cross-section. The edge support may be a continuous unit that is installed around the entire perimeter of the innerspring mattress assembly. The simple cross-section allows efficient extrusion manufacturing and is efficiently installed around the innerspring mattress coil matrix.

Edge support on a mattress

A box spring assembly for use as a foundation for a bedding mattress has a triple beam frame. The frame has three layers of which the bottom layer consists of longitudinal side rails equally spaced from a center rail and connected at each end to a double thickness end rail consisting of a lower and upper board. The middle layer of the frame includes a number of transverse slats equally spaced between the upper board end rails positioned at each lengthwise end of the box spring assembly. The lower board end rails underlie the upper board end rails and are in the bottom plane of the frame. The top layer of the frame consists of longitudinal slats spaced atop the transverse slats and upper board end rails. The triple beam frame is constructed of metal, wood, or a combination thereof. Coil springs are secured to the longitudinal slats in the box spring assembly. The longitudinal slats provide additional support and resistance to bending or deformation at the foot and head end of the box spring assembly, particularly if the foot end of the bed is unsupported by the bed frame. The provision of the longitudinal slats in a third layer of the wooden frame also provides a higher profile for the box spring assembly.

Triple beam frame

A mattress having a top surface component and a spring component. The top surface component comprises multiple layers. The first layer is the cover material for enveloping the entire mattress. The second layer is a fiber material covering the entire top surface of the mattress. The third layer is convoluted foam subtending the fiber layer and having a plurality of peaks for supporting the fiber layer in a no load condition. The fourth layer is a backing material for the convoluted foam layer. The peaks of the convoluted foam layer compress either completely or partially when a weight is applied and return to their original no load position when the weight is removed. The compression and return action of the peaks of the convoluted foam layer exercise the fiber layer preventing the matting thereof and cause the movement of air to keep the fiber layer dry.
