Detailed are brush assemblies for electric motors. The assemblies may include retention springs or other mechanisms designed to bias brushes away from surfaces of commutators during assembly of the motors. Such retention mechanisms additionally may be fitted into cavities in associated cover plates following motor assembly. The cover plates further may include tabs which, in use of the motor, assist in supporting side surfaces of the brushes and in orienting the plate relative to a corresponding brush card.

Brush assemblies

A brush box assembly for use in an electric motor and an electric motor having a brush biasing mechanism that also retains the brushes to allow installation of a sliding electrical contact assembly is described. The brush box assembly has a plurality of brush holders each with a brush retention slot, a plurality of brushes each adapted to fit in the brush retention slots, the brushes having a contact face and a non-contact face, and a plurality of torsion springs each having a spring loading arm and a spring retention arm, each spring loading arm contacting one brush on the non-contact face and adapted to bias the brush against a sliding electrical contact after installation of the sliding electrical contact assembly, each spring retention arm adapted to contact one brush on the front side and retain the brush in the brush retention slot during installation of the sliding electrical contact assembly. A method of manufacture of a device having brushes with the biasing and retention mechanism is also disclosed.

Brush box assembly

Addressed herein are commutators and methods of manufacturing them. The methods permit the carbonaceous material and core of a commutator to be molded simultaneously, rather than in a two-step process, and can eliminate one of two curing procedures used in connection with other manufacturing techniques. The necessity of machining the inner surface of the commutator shell to remove undesired excess phenolic or other material additionally is avoided by use of the techniques detailed herein. Commutators formed according to these methods may have increased useful lives and provide better performance than others presently available.
