A lost motion clutch assembly is disclosed which has first, second, and third clutch members. The first and third clutch members are mounted coaxially and contain a plurality of recesses in the surfaces facing each other. The second clutch member is disposed between the first and third, and preferably includes a plurality of balls disposed in arcuate recesses in the first and third clutch members. Each recess has two terminating ends forming engagement shoulders to engage a portion of the balls at the termination of each of the two directions of rotation. Upon inital rotation of the first clutch member in a first rotational direction, the third clutch member is not rotated until a ball has come into contact with the opposite end of the recess in the first clutch member 31 and also in engagement with the opposite end of a recess in the third clutch member. By this construction, an additional angle of angular lost motion is achieved for a given number of balls. Only 80 degrees of motion is achieved on the balls relative to one clutch member, but an additional 80 degrees is achieved between the balls and the other clutch member, for a total of about 160 degrees of lost motion, yet three balls are utilized for symmetry and for carrying the load.

Lost motion clutch assembly

A closure operator such as a garage door operator utilizes an apertured flexible tape. The tape is enclosed in a guide and a drive sprocket has teeth engaging the apertures to apply both tension and compression forces to open and close a door. The apertures are enlarged in width and length and the tape has fewer apertures per-unit-length compared to the prior art tape. This decreases the stress per-unit-area in the tape at each tooth and increases the shear strength of the webs between successive apertures to be more nearly equal to the tensile strength of the tension band areas of the tape.

Tape drive closure operator

A garage door operator is provided which includes a flexible, elongated tape within a relatively rigid, elongated guide rail mounted in a garage. The tape has first and second runs longitudinally disposed in first and second guide channels in the guide rail. A motor is connected to drive a drive wheel with the tape wrapped around a part of the drive wheel and having a positive drive engagement therewith. A carriage is longitudinally guided on the guide rail and is connected both to the tape for movement therewith and by a link to a garage door for opening and closing movements of the door. The guide rail may be cut into sections for a shorter shipping package, and the tape coiled in a loop during shipment but then disposed within the guide channels during operation, the guide rail being spliced into one long, continuous assembly for use in the garage. Tape drive door operator

A centrifugal switch is used in the motor control circuit in a garage door operator. Such operator has a motor driving through a friction clutch to move the door in opening and closing directions. If an overload condition on the door is encountered, the friction clutch will slip, slowing the driven member of the friction clutch. A cantilever contact blade is connected for rotation with the clutch driven member and slows, as well as moves radially inwardly, to engage a second conductor member which is coaxial with the output of the operator. This effects a switch-closed condition which acts through a control circuit to de-energize the electric motor. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.

Centrifugal switch and motor control

A limit switch mechanism is disclosed which may be easily moved along a guide channel and actuated by a carriage movable along the guide channel. The limit switch is constructed of only three or four parts for simple and economical manufacture and assembly. The base of the switch is of resilient insulating material to permit the switch base to be snapped onto the guide channel to be resiliently secured in an adjustable position. A bent wire has actuator, actuating, pivot, and retention portions, with the actuating portion actuating the two contacts between closed and open condition. The retention portion retains the bent wire longitudinally of the pivot axis and acts on the guide channel rather than on the base to permit ready assembly of the bent wire onto the base.

Switch mechanism

A switching mechanism is disclosed which may be either a single pole or a multiple pole switch. Actuator means is provided to actuate first and second contact means between open and closed circuit conditions. This actuator means is shown as a lever which acts on an actuable portion of a contact blade or directly moves a contact portion into and out of engagement with an individual contact. For economy the actuator means lever may be unitary with a housing by means of a unitary hinge which not only permits movement of the lever but also provides a resilient force in first and second generally perpendicular directions. This resilient force is used to establish the contacts in a closed circuit condition and is also resisted by a detent so that the switch remains in that selected circuit condition. When the switching mechanism is constructed as a multiple pole switch, then a common conductor is provided which has individual contact portions actuated by a plurality of levers for an economically produced switch. Switching mechanism

A door operator is disclosed which has a motor connected to open and close a door; for example, a garage door and a lamp is provided to illuminate the interior of the garage. Motor and lamp energization circuits are provided as controlled by switches; for example, a push button switch or a radio controlled switch. An alarm circuit is provided which may be a security alarm; for example, a burglar alarm or fire alarm. The alarm circuit is enabled when the door operator is not being used and the alarm circuit is disabled automatically whenever the door operator is being used. A time delay means is provided to maintain the lamp energized for a time delay period after the door has closed, and while the lamp is energized the alarm circuit is disabled, but as soon as the lamp is extinguished then the alarm circuit is enabled or armed.
