Markings visible by automatic optically guided cutting equipment are provided in a fabric such as a double layer fabric for one-piece-woven air bags by groups of black marker weft yarns which contrast with the other (white) weft yarns and warp yarns. The marker weft yarns emerge onto the upper face of the fabric only in predetermined marker areas spaced apart in the warp direction by other white weft yarns to afford optically identifiable markings spaced apart along said weft yarns and spaced apart along the direction of the warp yarns. The arrangement avoids the need for black warp yarns and thus avoids the inconveniences and loom down-time associated with required alterations to the locations of such optically detectable marker areas in the fabric web.

Fabric with woven markers

A fabric for use in the manufacture of an inflatable air-bag, the fabric having interwoven warp fibers and weft fibers which are arranged substantially perpendicular to one another, one or more of the warp and weft fibers being at least partially coated with an adhesive substance to increase the friction between the warp and weft fibers at their intersections. In another embodiment, the fabric is formed from fibers having a central core and another sheath.

Fabric for use in the manufacture of an inflatable air-bag

A fabric for an air-bag is woven in a pattern which comprises a plurality of fields. At least one of the fields has a first weave pattern, and at least another of the fields has a second weave pattern. The second weave pattern is relatively loosely-woven compared to the first weave pattern. The fabric may be used in the region of one or more mounts of an air-bag.

Fabric for an air-bag and an air-bag incorporating the fabric

A method of forming a fabric for an air-bag, the method comprising providing a plurality of yarns, each yarn being formed from a plurality of individual fibres; applying an activatable additive or coating to each yarn, the additive or coating initially not being activated and wherein, prior to activation, the additive or coating presents little or no impedance to the relative movement of the fibres within the yarn and, following activation, the additive or coating binds fibres within the yarn to one another to prevent or hinder relative movement of the fibres in the yarn with respect to one another; and passing the yarns through an activation zone including a compressing component which applies a compressive force to the yarns, the additive or coating being activated as the yarns pass through the activation zone so that the yarns each have a substantially flat configuration.

Inflatable airbag and a method for making the same

An air bag formed from a one piece woven air bag material having warp threads () and weft threads () composed of different polymeric fibers. The air bag in accordance with this invention is inexpensive to fabricate without compromises on strength by providing the weft threads () and the warp threads () have the same thread linear density.

Airbag

An air-bag in the form of an air-bag is disclosed, having an upper edge provided with mounting tabs to mount the upper edge to a motor vehicle. The upper edge of the air-bag is also provided with a gas inlet throat at a position between the ends of the upper edge. The gas inlet throat is configured to receive an end part of an elongate gas generator, and the upper edge of the air-bag is provided with a gas generator retainer, in the form of a loop to engage part of the gas generator.

Air-bag

A double yarn airbag fabric is disclosed, which may include an inflatable fabric portion, comprising multiple first yarns that form multiple sets of first yarns, and multiple second yarns. At least two sets of first yarns are alternately woven around at least two adjacent second yarns at each weave. The result of weaving are two opposing woven fabric layers formed from two pairs of the alternating second yarn sets, such that a space to be inflated is formed between the two opposing fabric layers. The two opposing fabric layers may be formed in a continuous weaving process. The fabric also includes a non-inflatable fabric portion by alternately weaving two pairs of alternating first yarn sets around two adjacent second yarns at each weave, to form a single, woven fabric layer. The multiple first yarns may include warp yarns and the multiple second yarns may include weft yarns, or vice versa.

Double weft/warp airbag fabric and related airbags and manufacturing methods

An air-bag is disclosed which preferably takes the form of an inflatable curtain The air-bag forms at least one inflatable region () and has an upper edge () provided with a plurality of mounting tabs (). Each mounting tab () defines an axis which is inclined inwardly toward a region above the centre of the air-bag. Preferably, each tab is inclined at an angle between 30&#xb0; and 70&#xb0;.

Inflatable curtain air-bag

An air-bag comprising an inflatable element having an inflatable region and a gas inlet throat extending from the inflatable region, a gusset of excess fabric being present in the region proximate to the junction between the gas inlet throat and the inflatable region.

An air bag formed from two layers of fabric using a one-piece weaving technique has a peripheral seam at the edge of a region adapted to be inflated. Beyond the seam there are a plurality of chambers and gas escaping from the inflated region through the seam must inflate these chambers thus creating a back pressure to reduce the flow of escaping gas.

Airbag apparatus

An air-bag has a primary gas flow duct leading from a gas generator to one or more zones within the air-bag which are to be inflated. The air-bag has a separate inner gas flow duct mounted within the outer gas flow duct. The inner gas flow duct and the outer gas flow duct have areas thereof secured together in the region that is to be connected to the gas generator.

Air bag

A one-piece woven air-bag in the form of an inflatable curtain has two inflatable regions separated by an uninflatable region which incorporates an expansion panel to relieve excessive tension that may arise within the inflatable curtain. The expansion panel comprises a region where there are two outer layers of fabric interconnected by an intermediate or third layer extending from the first layer to the second layer. Slit lines are provided in the outer layers so that the expansion panel may expand when subjected to tension.
