A system for providing data to electrical devices in an interconnected network can include a user system disposed in a volume of space, where the user system has a communication range, where the user system broadcasts multiple communication signals into the volume of space. The system can also include an electrical device disposed within the communication range of the user system, where the electrical device includes a controller, where the controller can retrieve first information from a first communication signal, where the information includes a file identification for a file and a number of blocks in the file. The controller can also generate a table for the number of blocks in the file and retrieve second information from a second communication signal, where the second information comprises a first block of the file. The controller can also store the first block of the file in the table.

Updating electrical devices with limited communication capability in integrated networks

A system for assigning alternative identification to objects can include a first communication device of a first object, where the first communication device broadcasts a first communication signal that includes a first identification of the first object. The system can also include a first electrical device having a first receiver and a first transmitter, where the first receiver receives the first communication signal. The system can further include a controller communicably coupled to the first electrical device, where the controller retrieves the first identification of the first communication device from the first communication signal, assigns a first alternative identification to the first communication device based on the first identification, saves the first identification and the first alternative identification of the first object in a first table, and sends a second communication signal that includes the first alternative identification and the first identification of the first object.

In one embodiment, a method for controlling access to media content includes defining a viewing profile for at least one viewing user according to a multiplicity of attributes associated with the media content, assigning allowable limits to the multiplicity of attributes in the viewing profile, where each of the allowable limits indicates a rating limit for one of the multiplicity of attributes, receiving attribute ratings associated with a media content item, where each of the attribute ratings is associated with one of the multiplicity of attributes, determining viewing permissibility for the media content item by the at least one viewing user by comparing the attribute ratings with the allowable limits, and based on the viewing permissibility, allowing or disallowing the at least one viewing user to view the media content item.

A system can include a precondition detector configured to determine that the system has network congestion at a network link. The system can also include a flow ranking controller that includes a flow excluder configured to apply exclusion criteria to a plurality of data flows associated with respective modems that are operating in a lower bandwidth mode to generate a list of non-excluded data flows. The flow ranking controller can also include a flow tester configured to apply flow tests to the non-excluded data flows to determine which of the respective modems is likely to benefit from being switched to a higher bandwidth mode.

Memory for response event data is allocated from a first pool. The response event data is associated with a response, and the response is associated with the request. Upon failure of the allocation of memory for the response event data, memory is obtained for out-of-memory response event data. The out-of-memory response event data is associated with the response event. The request event is completed using the response event.

System and method for handling memory allocation failures through reserve allocation of event data

A set-top terminal and related methods is provided that, in one embodiment, comprises a memory with proactive reboot logic and a processor configured with the proactive reboot logic to detect an indication of a critical condition associated with the set-top terminal, determine based on a current status of resources in the set-top terminal if a current time provides an opportunity for a reboot of the set-top terminal in a manner that reduces user intrusiveness, and effect a rebooting of the set-top terminal if the current time provides the opportunity, otherwise postponing the reboot.

A broadcast data access system is provided for receiving broadcast data by applications residing on a multimedia client, where the broadcast data is a set of modules on a data carousel that are being broadcast over a broadcast network. The broadcast data access system includes an interest manager configured to store a plurality of interests, such that each interest identifies an available module on the data carousel being requested by an application. The system further includes at least one application having registered an interest for a first module with the interest manager, and a dispatcher distributing the first module to the requesting application by accessing the interest manager.

Broadcast data access system for multimedia clients in a broadcast network architecture

A computer-implemented method and apparatus for restoring operating systems within a set-top box system. The restoration provides for operating a first operating system in a first memory. An application program is operated in a second memory. The first operating system is stored in a second memory so that a second operating system is loaded into the first memory. When a predetermined condition which is associated with the second operating system is detected, the first operating system is loaded into the first memory in response to the detected predetermined condition. Such a system provides such non-limiting advantages to the set-top box as the ability to robustly recover from errors or anomalies associated with downloading an operating system.
