A vertical hearth barbecue grill having a removable, vertical firebox that is backwardly inclined so as to provide a combination of direct and indirect heating. Multiple cooking grids positionable at various heights across the firebox provide an substantial cooking area for grilling, broiling, and searing. Inclination minimizes ash avalanche during briquette burning. A top grid located directly over the firebox provides a surface for searing or high-temperature cooking (i.e., direct heating), a mid-level cooking grid provides medium temperature indirect and/or partial direct heating cooking, and a lower main cooking grid provides indirect medium temperature for broiling or baking. A pair of opposed insulated sidewalls help confine heat in and about the cooking grids and may also support a removable, hinged cover lid that establishes an oven-like enclosure about the mid-level and main cooking grids to provide a baking/broiling chamber. Portable versions of the grill collapse like a suitcase (with all grill components contained therein), fold-up legs may be provided, side shelves may be attachable, and/or a rotisserie rod may be added.

Vertical hearth barbecue grill

A removable firebox for use in a portable, collapsible barbecue grill including retractable heating grate on top of the firebox and a retractable mid-level cooking grill for providing high-temperature cooking. A lower main grill is disposed in a base cavity of the barbecue grill for providing moderate temperature cooking. The firebox rests in the base cavity of the grill housing and provides heat to a cooking area defined by the base cavity, an upper lid of the housing and a pair of side walls extending upward from the base cavity. The firebox and/or the upper lid includes insulation and/or cooling baffles to protect users from heated surfaces. Venting is provided from the sides and rear of the grill housing. When collapsed, the grate and grills fold onto or are retracted within the firebox, and the entire firebox assembly is stowed in a sealed grill housing. The top and bottom portions of the grill housing mate to form a sealed container-like structure for convenient transportability or storage. The barbecue grill also includes foldable legs which lock into extend position, when deployed.

Firebox for vertical hearth barbecue grill

A gas-fired or briquette-burning barbecue grill that outputs extremely high BTUs from a removable, vertical firebox that is backwardly inclined so as to provide a combination of direct and indirect heating. In addition, multiple cooking grids positioned at various vertical levels across the face of the firebox provide an enormous cooking area for grilling, broiling, and searing. Inclination minimizes ash avalanche during briquette burning and also increases the effective heating area applied to multiple cooking grids of gas-fired and briquette-burning grills. A top grid located directly over the firebox provides a surface for searing or high-temperature cooking (i.e., direct heating), a mid-level cooking grid provides medium temperature indirect and/or partial direct heating cooking, and a lower main cooking grid provides indirect medium temperature for broiling or baking. A pair of opposed insulated sidewalls on each side of a central heating area includes respective sets of rail guides which support cooking grids at varying distances from the firebox. The sidewalls also help confine heat in and about the cooking grids and may also support a removable, hinged cover lid that establishes an oven-like enclosure about the mid-level and main cooking grids to provide a baking/broiling chamber. Grid elements of the main cooking grid, which is downwardly inclined about three degrees toward the front of the gill, comprise oppositely facing channels that route grease drippings from cooking foodstuffs to a grease-catching receptacle. The firebox rests in a cradle or receptacle and is adapted to be easily removed by a grasp handle insertable in a surface of the firebox. A wire basket inside the metal firebox retains briquettes in spaced relation to the firebox walls thereby to provide an ash reservoir for briquettes as they burn and/or to thermally insulate hot fuels from the sidewalls and top lid of the grill. Portable versions of the grill collapse like a suitcase (with all grill components contained therein), fold-up legs may be provided, side shelves may be attachable, and/or a rotisserie rod may be added.

A broiler pan cooking grid for a barbecue grill that catches and/or routes grease drippings, as well as permitting convection of heated air through the structure. The grid may be used with conventional horizontal barbecue grills or with grills having a vertical hearth or firebox. The grid assembly preferably comprises sheet metal having cutouts stamped in the upper surface, e.g., elongated slots or perforations, and a series of elongated troughs stamped in the lower surface. The elongated troughs of the lower layer route grease drippings to a grease box or tray that is disposed along the front edge of the cooking grid assembly. As series of stiffening rods are sandwiched between the layers to provide rigidity when using thin sheet metal. Preferably, the grid assembly is supported in an inclined position by the barbecue grill, but the lower sheet metal stamping may itself be formed to contain the grease or to effect the flow of grease to a grease box.

Broiler pan cooking grid

A barbecue grill includes a body defining a heating chamber and having an open top. A main food supporting grill is mounted on the body in a generally horizontal manner so as to span at least a portion of the open top. Walls extend generally upwardly from portions of the body. The walls include opposing side walls and a rear wall extending between the side walls. A grate is mounted between the side walls and is in spaced relation to the rear wall so as to define a generally vertically arranged fire chamber for holding a source of heat generating fuel. A secondary food supporting grill is mounted between the side walls, forwardly of the grate and above and generally parallel to the main grill. Whereby, when fuel is generating heat in the fire chamber, heat is reflected from the rear wall structure and (1) convects from the fire chamber to the heating chamber and generally upwardly through the main grill and secondary grill and (2) radiates generally outwardly from the fire chamber to the main grill and secondary grill.
