It is presented a method for authenticating a candidate individual, comprising the steps of: obtaining candidate biometric data related to the candidate individual; obtaining a first data item related to first reference biometric data from a data carrier, wherein any significant part of the first reference biometric data is not readily available from the first data item; obtaining a second data item related to the first reference biometric data from digital storage, wherein any significant part of the first reference biometric data is not readily available from the second data item; working out a second reference biometric data using the first data item and the second data item; and authenticating the candidate individual (101') when the candidate biometric data is determined to correspond to the first reference biometric data using the second reference biometric data and the candidate biometric data. Corresponding authentication apparatus, data carrier issuing apparatus and ticket are also presented.

Apparatuses, system and method for authentication

There are two different methods of embedding supplemental data, e.g. for watermarking into an encoded signal. I. For an encoder, which needs auxiliary information for encoding (=probability information in this special case), the auxiliary information to encode the supplemental data is derived from data used otherwise in the encoding process. The advantage is that the derived auxiliary data does not have to be stored, so that embedding the supplemental data is economical with respect to the total amount of bits used. II. In the encoding process used for super Audio CD, a set of parameters (e.g. filter coefficients) is used by the encoder, whereby these parameters have to be stored, as they are needed for decoding. To embed supplemental data, at least one of the chosen parameters (e.g. the LSB of the first coefficient) is set to a dedicated value in response to the value of the supplemental data to be embedded. The advantage is that the bit rate will not be affected at all.

Embedding supplemental data in an encoded signal

For 'Super Audio CD' (SACD) the DSD signals are losslessly coded, using framing, prediction and entropy coding. Besides the efficiently encoded signals, a large number of parameters, i.e. the side-information, has to be stored on the SACD too. The smaller the storage capacity that is required for the side-information, the better the overall coding gain is. Therefore coding techniques are applied to the side-information too so as to compress the amount of data of the side information.

Efficient coding of side information in a lossless encoder

A data compression apparatus for data compressing an audio signal includes an input terminal () for receiving the audio signal, a 1-bit A/D converter () for A/D converting the audio signal so as to obtain a bitstream signal, a lossless coder () for carrying out a lossless data compression step on the bitstream signal so as to obtain a data-compressed bitstream signal, and an output terminal () for supplying the data-compressed bitstream signal.

Data compression and expansion of an audio signal

A transmitter is disclosed for transmitting a digital information signal via a transmission medium. The digital information signal can be divided into one or more sub-signals. Each sub-signal is transmitted as a non-encoded or as an encoded signal. In which way the sub-signal is transmitted depends on the compression that can be achieved by the encoder. If the compression is low the sub-signal is transmitted in non-encoded form. For the receiver an identification is added to the composite signal to be transmitted. A first component of the identification signal indicates if one or more sub-signals are transmitted in encoded form. A second component of the identification signal indicates for each sub-signal whether it appears in encoded or non-encoded form in the composite signal. The invention provides a composite signal with a minimal number of bits.

A data processing apparatus for data processing an audio signal includes an input terminal () for receiving the audio signal, a 1-bit A/D converter () for A/D converting the audio signal to for a bitstream signal, a prediction unit () for carrying out a prediction step on the bitstream signal to form a predicted bitstream signal, a signal combination unit () for combining the bitstream signal and the predicted bitstream signal to form a residue bitstream signal, and an output terminal () for supplying the residual bitstream signal.

Bitstream data reduction coding by applying prediction

A data compression apparatus is disclosed for data compressing an audio signal. The data compression apparatus comprises an input terminal ( ) for receiving the audio signal, a 1-bit A/D converter ( ) for A/D converting the audio signal so as to obtain a bitstream signal, a lossless coder ( ) for carrying out a lossless data compression step on the bitstream signal so as to obtain a data compressed bitstream signal, and an output terminal ( ) for supplying the data compressed bitstream signal. Further, a recording apparatus and a transmitter apparatus comprising the data compression apparatus are disclosed. In addition, a data expansion apparatus for data expanding the data compressed bitstream signal supplied by the data compression apparatus is disclosed, as well as a reproducing apparatus and a receiver apparatus comprising the data expansion apparatus.

For &ldquo;Super Audio CD&rdquo; (SACD) the DSD signals are losslessly coded, using framing, prediction and entropy coding. In a receiver, a tuner (TUN) converts a reception signal (Srf) to an intermediate-frequency signal (Sif). An adjustable frequency converter (AFRC) converts the intermediate-frequency signal (Sif) to an input signal (Sin) for a filter arrangement (FIL) which is capable of providing various frequency responses (Hfil , Hfil ) associated with different transmission standards. The adjustable frequency converter (AFRC) and the filter arrangement (FIL) may form part of an integrated receiver-circuit (IRC) suitable for many different transmission standards. The tuner (TUN) may provide the intermediate-frequency signal (Sif) at any one of various different intermediate frequencies (IF , IF ). For any intermediate frequency (IF ,IF ), the adjustable frequency converter (AFRC) can be adjusted in such a way that the filter arrangement (FIL) receives the input signal (Sin) in a frequency range (FR) which is suitably located with respect to its frequency responses (Hfil , Hfil ). Thus, the adjustable frequency converter (AFRC) allows the use of any one of various different intermediate frequencies and, therefore, allows the use of relatively cheap standard-specific tuners. Thus, it allows relatively cost-efficient implementations.

Multi-standard reception

A data processing apparatus includes an input terminal for receiving an audio signal, a 1-bit A/D converter for A/D converting the audio signal into a 1-bit bitstream signal, and a prediction unit for carrying out a prediction step on the bitstream signal so as to obtain a predicted bitstream signal. The data processing apparatus further includes a signal combination unit for combining the bitstream signal and the predicted bitstream signal so as to obtain a residue bitstream signal. A recording apparatus or a transmitter apparatus can use the data processing apparatus. The residue bitstream signal is data compressed by lossless encoding and then error encoded and channel encoded prior to transmission through a media.

Processing an audio bitstream signal

A transmitter transmits a digital information signal via a transmission medium. The digital information signal can be divided into one or more sub-signals. Each sub-signal is transmitted as a non-encoded or as an encoded signal. Thus, the sub-signal is transmitted depending on the compression that can be achieved by the encoder. If the compression is low the sub-signal is transmitted in non-encoded form. For the receiver, an identification is added to the composite signal to be transmitted. A first component of the identification signal indicates if one or more sub-signals are transmitted in encoded form. A second component of the identification signal indicates for each sub-signal, whether it appears in encoded or non-encoded form in the composite signal. The invention provides a composite signal with a minimal number of bits.

In a receiver for receiving a modulated carrier (MC) having asymmetrical sidebands (USB,LSB), for example, a TV signal, a synchronous demodulator (SDEM) derives a vectorial baseband signal (VB) from the modulated carrier (MC). A filter (FILT) filters the vectorial baseband signal so as to compensate for the sideband asymmetry, for example, by means of a Nyquist slope. Thus, the sideband asymmetry is compensated at baseband frequencies, rather than at an intermediate frequency, which allows a better quality of reception.

A data processing apparatus includes an input terminal for receiving an audio signal, a 1-bit A/D converter for A/D converting the audio signal so as to obtain a bitstream signal, and a prediction unit for carrying out a prediction step on the bitstream signal so as to obtain a predicted bitstream signal. The data processing apparatus further includes a signal combination unit for combining the bitstream signal and the predicted bitstream signal so as to obtain a residue bitstream signal, and an output terminal for supplying the residual bitstream signal. A recording apparatus or a transmitter apparatus can use the data processing apparatus.

Data processing of a bitstream signal

A digital information signal is compressed into an encoded signal and coefficient data. The coefficient data is predicted, yielding a prediction signal. The coefficient data and the prediction signal are combined to a data signal. Both the encoded signal and the data signal are transmitted via the transmission medium.
