A method providing an estimation of a shooting range with high accuracy by a miss distance estimation and a weapon caliber classification following detection of shooting of firearms with supersonic bullets, and by using novel equations constructed from field shooting data for each caliber in order to ensure a security of a patrol station, a border, troops, a society, a vehicle and a convoy is provided.

A method for acoustic detection of shooter location includes the following steps: receiving acoustic signals by a microphone array; detecting muzzle blast (MB) and shock wave (SW) signals through matched filter and cross correlation processes; transforming the detected MB and SW signals from time domain into frequency domain; beamforming the signals by means of the Delay and Sum method in frequency domain; estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) for the MB and SW signals by finding the azimuth and elevation which give the maximum power of the beamforming response; performing range estimation using the difference between the arrival time of the MB and SW signals together with the DOA estimations.

Method for acoustic detection of shooter location

A Remotely Powered Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (RPUASN) paradigm and the node architecture for RPUASN are disclosed. In RPUASN, sensor nodes harvest and store power supplied by an external acoustic source, extending their lifetime indefinitely. Necessary source characteristics are determined. The ability of an RPUASN sensor to harvest its required power is disclosed with respect to source parameters and distance to the source. Performance of RPUASN is directly related to the sensing coverage and communication connectivity over the field the sensor nodes are deployed. The required number of RPUASN nodes and the volume which is guaranteed to be covered by the nodes is disclosed in terms of electrical power, range, directivity and transmission frequency of the external acoustic source, and node power requirements.
