An electro-optical link is provided. In an example embodiment, the electro-optical link includes a number of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs); one or more drivers that operate the VCSELs such that each of the VCSELs selectively emits an optical signal; one or more multiplexers that multiplex a number of optical signals into an optical fiber, each optical signal emitted by one of the VCSELs; and one or more optical fibers. At least two optical signals are multiplexed into each optical fiber of the one or more optical fibers. In some example configurations eight or sixteen optical signals are multiplexed into one optical fiber.

Dual band wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) link for vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs)

A switching device includes a plurality of ports and a switching core, which is coupled to transfer data packets between ingress and egress ports. Switching logic maintains a descriptor queue containing respective descriptors corresponding to the data packets that have been received and queued by the ports, and responsively to the respective descriptors, instructs the switching core to transfer the queued data packets between the ports. Port logic, which is associated with each port, is configured, upon receipt of a data packet from the network at the port, to signal the switching logic to place a descriptor corresponding to the data packet in the descriptor queue and, upon identifying the data packet as meeting a predefined criterion, to convey a request to the switching logic, bypassing the descriptor queue, to instruct the switching core to transfer the data packet immediately to an egress port.

Packet switch with reduced latency

A transducer reliability testing and VCSEL failure prediction method are provided. The method includes applying a testing temperature and a constant current to a VCSEL for a testing time. The method monitors a forward voltage of the VCSEL and determines if a first change in forward voltage is above a first predetermined threshold over the testing time and if a second change in forward voltage is above a second predetermined threshold over a portion of the testing time. The method determines failure of the VCSEL if either of these predetermined thresholds are exceeded. The method determines passage of the VCSEL if the first change in the forward voltage and the second change in the forward voltage are both below the first predetermined threshold and the second predetermined threshold, respectively.

Transducer reliability testing

An electro-optic transceiver module, method of manufacturing, and method of transmitting signals are provided that allow multiple optical signals at different wavelengths (e.g., according to CWDM) to be combined for transmission via a number of optical fibers that is smaller than the number of electrical channels according to which the optical signals were generated. Thus, CWDM may be used in connection with lower-cost VCSEL technology (e.g., as opposed to higher-cost edge-emitting lasers) by providing for wavelength compensation at the VCSEL driver to offset any changes in wavelength that may have otherwise occurred at the VCSELs. In particular, a microcontroller of the electro-optic transceiver module correlates a monitored temperature of the VCSELs to an actual wavelength of the corresponding optical signals transmitted by the respective VCSELS and determined an adjustment in a current supplied by the VCSEL driver to each VCSEL to achieve more precise and consistent wavelengths at the VCSELs.

Electro-optic transceiver module with wavelength compensation

An opto-mechanical coupler and corresponding method are provided. The coupler may include a first end and a second end configured to receive optical fibers and a top surface and bottomed surface defining a through hole extending between the top and bottom surfaces. The coupler may include a reflective surface that redirects the optical signals between a first direction and a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction. The coupler may position one or more optical fibers along a second direction such that an optical signal from the plurality of optoelectronic transceivers is directed into one or more optical fibers or an optical signal from the one or more optical fibers is directed into a plurality of the optoelectronic transceivers, with the coupler accommodating different diameters of optical fiber including POF, SMF, and/or MMF fiber.

Opto-mechanical coupler

An apparatus and method of assembly are described that provide improved mechanisms for cooling an optoelectronic transducer in a fiber optic system. The apparatus includes a thermoelectric cooler (TEC) secured to the optoelectronic transducer for removing heat from the optoelectronic transducer in response to instructions from a TEC driver, as well as a microcontroller electrically connected to the TEC driver for monitoring temperature and communicating with the TEC driver to selectively activate and deactivate the TEC at least partially based on the monitored temperature and/or other measured/detected data to effect a more efficient cooling mechanism for optoelectronic transducers, such as VCSELs. In addition, the user may be able to configure the system to maintain the optoelectronic transducer within a user-defined range of temperatures. In this way, a longer life and better performance of the optoelectronic transducer may be achieved, and datacenter costs related to cooling and/or maintenance may be minimized.

Optoelectronic transducer with integrally mounted thermoelectric cooler

An optoelectronic configuration method is provided. The method includes determining a baseline link budget value for the VCSEL. The method applies a constant input value to a VCSEL and monitors the output of the VCSEL. The method calculates a first link budget value from the inputs and outputs of the VCSEL and compares the first link budget value with the baseline link budget value to determine either a pass state of the VCSEL or a fail state of the VCSEL. If a fail state of the VCSEL is determined, the method may iteratively apply modified inputs to the VCSEL until the desired relationship between the first link budget value and the baseline link budget value is obtained.

Method of configuring an optoelectronic system for accommodating different fiber optic cable lengths

A reconfigurable and redundant electro-optical connector and corresponding method are provided. The connector may include a first plurality of transducers in communication with a first port and a second plurality of transducers in communication with a second port, the first port and the first transducers defining a first channel and the second port and the second transducers defining a second channel. The connector may include a selective combiner to combine the first optical signals and the second optical signals, and a controller in communication with each of the transducers. The controller may transmit at least a first portion of a first datalink on at least the first channel in a first configuration. The controller may redistribute the first portion of the first datalink onto at least the second channel in a second configuration.

Redundant and reconfigurable optical transceiver

An apparatus includes multiple data sources and arbitration circuitry. The data sources are configured to send to a common destination data items and respective arbitration requests, such that the data items are sent to the destination regardless of receiving any indication that the data items were served to the destination in response to the respective arbitration requests. The arbitration circuitry is configured to receive and buffer the data items, to perform arbitration on the buffered data items responsively to the arbitration requests, and to serve the buffered data items to the destination in accordance with the arbitration.

Credit based low-latency arbitration with data transfer

A communication apparatus includes a plurality of switch ports, each switch port including one or more port buffers for buffering data that traverses the switch port. A switch fabric is coupled to transfer the data between the switch ports. A switch control unit is configured to reassign at least one port buffer of a given switch port to buffer a part of the data that does not enter or exit the apparatus via the given switch port, and to cause the switch fabric to forward the part of the data to a destination switch port via the at least one reassigned port buffer.

Data switch with shared port buffers

A method for communication includes routing a first packet, which belongs to a given packet flow, over a first routing path through a communication network. A second packet, which follows the first packet in the given packet flow, is routed using a time-bounded Adaptive Routing (AR) mode, by evaluating a time gap between the first and second packets, routing the second packet over the first routing path if the time gap does not exceed a predefined threshold, and, if the time gap exceeds the predefined threshold, selecting a second routing path through the communication network that is potentially different from the first routing path, and routing the second packet over the second routing path.

High-performance adaptive routing

A method and system for digital communication wherein nodes exchange messages at a first data rate in order to coordinate testing at a second, higher data rate. After testing is completed, the nodes exchange test results at the first data rate, and if conditions are satisfactory for operation at the second data rate user data are transmitted at the second data rate. Otherwise, user data are transmitted at the first data rate.

Auto-negotiation by nodes on an infiniband fabric

A method for link-level flow control includes establishing a plurality of logical links over a physical link between a transmitting entity and a receiving entity in a network. Respective maximum limits of transmission credits are assigned to the logical links, the credits corresponding to space available to the links in a dynamically allocable portion of a receive buffer at the receiving entity, such that a sum of the maximum limits for all of the logical links corresponds to an amount of space substantially larger than a total volume of the space in the dynamically allocable portion of the receive buffer. Responsive to traffic from the transmitting entity to the receiving entity on a given one of the logical links, one or more of the credits are allocated to the given logical link when it is determined that a total of the credits allocated to the given logical link is no greater than the respective maximum limit, and that a total of the credits allocated to all of the logical links together corresponds to an allocated volume that is no greater than the total volume of the space in the dynamically allocable portion of the receive buffer. Transmission of data over the given logical link is controlled responsive to the allocated credits.

Packet communication buffering with dynamic flow control

A device for switching packets in a network includes a switching core and a plurality of ports, coupled to pass the packets from one to another through the switching core. The ports include, with respect to each packet among the packets switched by the device, a receiving port, coupled to receive the packet from a packet source, and a destination port, to which the packet is passed for conveyance to a packet destination. The ports also include one or more cache memories, respectively associated with one or more of the ports, each of the cache memories being configured to hold a forwarding database cache for reference by the receiving port with which the cache memory is associated in determining the destination port of the packet.
