Wide-range power-regulation method for wireless power receiving units by using hybrid multi-level topologies

A high-resolution adaptive digital frequency synthesizer Integrated Circuit (IC) for wireless power systems, which comprises a digitally controlled tunable ring-oscillator, based on a chain of delay-line cells (DLs) being adapted to generate an internal high-resolution reference clock signal; a tuner unit for receiving as input a compensation/target signal and performing arithmetic operations that produce auxiliary tuning signals provided to the ring-oscillator, for allowing the ring-oscillator to generate a high-resolution output period/frequency; a counter-comparator unit introducing an additional delay to the chain, the counter-comparator unit operating in combination with the ring-oscillator and counts how many times the delay of the chain repeats, for providing ultra-fine tuning signal for tuning the frequency resolution of digitally controlled ring-oscillator; an adaptive Fractional-N dithering module, for enhancing the frequency resolution of the digitally controlled ring-oscillator by averaging the resolution provided by a single delay-line cell of the ring-oscillator.

High-accuracy adaptive digital frequency synthesizer for wireless power systems

A plug-and-play Transient Suppression Unit (TSU) for Voltage Regulator Modules (VRMs), which comprises a bi-directional current source connected via a high voltage port and a low voltage port of the TSU in parallel to a voltage output of the VRM, adapted to immediately sink or source current supplied to a load; a detection circuit for detecting mismatches between the voltage output of the VRM to a reference steady-state voltage, which comprises a first comparator for detecting a match between the voltage output of the VRM to the reference steady-state voltage; a second comparator for detecting a mismatch between the voltage output of the VRM to a predefined threshold higher than the reference steady-state voltage; a third comparator for detecting a mismatch between the voltage output of the VRM to a predefined threshold lower than the reference steady-state voltage value; a transient response accelerator, connected via a third port of the TSU to the output compensation port of the VRM error amplifier, and adapted to control duty-ratio saturation of the VRM. A loading transient is detected by the third comparator, upon which the VRM's duty ratio is saturated to a maximal value by the transient response accelerator and current is sourced from the current source to the output, until the first comparator detects that the voltage output of the VRM matches the expected steady-state voltage. An unloading transient is detected by the second comparator, upon which the VRM's duty ratio is saturated to a minimal value by the transient response accelerator and current is sunk from the output into the current source, until the first comparator detects that the voltage output of the VRM matches the expected steady-state voltage.

Plug-and-play electronic capacitor for voltage regulator modules applications

The present invention introduces a new compact Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) solution that hybrids a buck converter with a resonant switched-capacitor auxiliary circuit that is connected at the load side. By using a new control concept of the present invention, the auxiliary circuit effectively mimics increased capacitance during loading and unloading transient events, reducing the burden on both the input and output filters, and reduces the current stress.

Voltage regulator module using a load-side auxiliary gyrator circuit

A power converter, which comprises a resonant Switched Capacitor Converter (SCC) that consists of an input connected to an input voltage source, from which power is delivered to a load; a resonant tank circuit formed by a capacitor connected in series with an inductor and defining a resonant cycle; a first switch connected in series between a first contact of the input voltage source and a first contact of the resonant tank circuit; a second switch connected in series between the first contact of the resonant tank circuit and a first contact of the load; a conducting path connecting between a second contact of the input voltage source, a second contact of the resonant tank circuit and a second contact of the load and a third switch connected in parallel to the resonant tank circuit. The converter is adapted to charge the resonant tank circuit by controlling the first switch to start conducting at a first zero crossing point and allow current to flow from the input voltage source to the tank circuit during a first portion of the cycle; discharge the resonant tank circuit into the load by controlling the first switch to stop conducting and the second switch to start conducting, at a second zero crossing point to thereby allow current to flow from the tank circuit to the load during a second portion of the cycle, and reverse the voltage polarity on the capacitor by controlling the second switch to stop conducting and the third switch to start conducting at a third zero crossing point during the last portion of the cycle.

High efficiency resonant switched capacitor converter with continuous conversion ratio

A method for increasing the power extraction capability out of Differential Power Processor (DPP) system, which consists of a chain of N serially connected PV elements and an array of N&#x2212;1 gyrator-type converters which are current sourcing resonant Switched Capacitor Converters (SCCs), each of which being connected in parallel with two adjacent PV elements. Accordingly, local MPPT is continuously performed, by each gyrator-type converter, to one of its two connected PV elements by sinking or sourcing current to/from the neighboring PV element. Whenever a mismatch in the MPPs is detected, the gyrator-type converters are used to provide the difference in current that is required for each of the PV elements to operate at its MPP, such that the amount of power processed by each gyrator-type converter in the chain is linearly proportional to its location in the chain, with respect to the mismatched PV element.
