Provided herein are the polymers shown below. The value n is a positive integer. Ris an organic group, and each Ris H or a chemisorbed group, with at least one Rbeing a chemisorbed group. The polymer may be a nanostructured film. Also provided herein is a method of: converting a di-p-xylylene paracyclophane dimer to a reactive vapor of monomers; depositing the reactive vapor onto a substrate held at an angle relative to the vapor flux to form nanostructured poly(p-xylylene) film; reacting the film with an agent to form hydrogen atoms that are reactive with a precursor of a chemisorbed group, if the film does not contain the hydrogen atoms; and reacting the hydrogen atoms with the precursor. Also provided herein is a device having a nanostructured poly(p-xylylene) film on a pivotable substrate. The film has directional hydrophobic or oleophobic properties and directional adhesive properties.

The present invention is directed to a method for making a conformal antenna on a surface by providing a composition comprising a polymer matrix and a plurality of metalized tubules and applying the composition to the surface as two parallel wires connected at their ends to make a closed loop with one of the parallel wires broken in the middle. Also disclosed is an alternate method for making a conformal antenna on a surface by spraying a first material comprising a polymer matrix onto the surface and simultaneously spraying a second material comprising a plurality of metalized tubules and a coagulant onto the surface, wherein the first and second materials mix together during the spraying. A further method for making a conformal antenna includes spraying a first material comprising a polymer matrix and a plurality of metalized tubules onto the surface and simultaneously spraying a second material comprising an aqueous electroless plating bath onto the surface, wherein the first and second materials mix together during the spraying.

Catalytic enzyme-modified textiles are disclosed for providing protection from chemical exposure. A galvanic cell having a cathode, an anode, and an electrolyte. The cathode and anode each have vesicles, an electroactive species encapsulated into the vesicles, a conducting substrate, and functionalized tethers immobilizing the vesicles to the substrates. The electrolyte is in contact with both conducting substrates. At least some of the vesicles contain benzoquinone and/or hydroquinone.

A colorimetric detector for chemical and biological agents or toxins is made of a giant unilamellar vesicle (GUV) having a membrane bilayer which is polymerized to stabilize the giant unilamellar vesicle and to provide extended conjugated polymer backbone, and the GUV has at least one incorporated molecular recognition site for the chemical and biological agents or toxins. The GUVs are about 10-300 microns and preferably made of a polymerizable diacetylenic GUV where the acyl chains are crosslinked. When the agents or toxins bind to the recognition site the detector exhibits a color change. The detector can be used in a colorimetric detector apparatus where the samples can be present in air or in water.

Method, detector, and apparatus for colorimetric detection of chemical and biological agents

The invention relates to a microbattery made of bioelectroactive components based on biomimetic processes. Bio-derived electron donors and electron acceptors are separately encapsulated in at least one pair of polymerized phospholipid vesicles. Embedded within the vesicle walls are lipophilic electron mediators that facilitate the transfer of electrons across the vesicle walls. Each pair of vesicles is immobilized on a conducting surface. The pair of vesicles are isolated from each other to create a galvanic cell, in which electrons flow from high to low electrochemical potential. A high energy density battery can be achieved if the vesicles are immobilized on highly porous conducting substrates.

This invention pertains to a process for preparing diacetylenics, to diacetylenic compounds and to reduced diacetylenic compounds. The process includes the steps of reacting coupling an acetylenic acid in presence of cupric chloride in Ethylamine and hydroxylamine hydrochloride to form a diacetylenic diacid; reacting the diacetylenic diacid with a lithium compound, trimethylsilyl chloride and hydrochloric acid to form a diacetylenic compound; and reducing the diacetylenic compound to a reduced diacetylenic compound.
