Methods, systems, and devices are described for managing wireless communications in a machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless Wide Area Network (WAN). A packet is decoded and demodulated by an M2M device that is received during a time slot of a physical layer forward link frame in the M2M wireless WAN. The packet is transmitted by a base station. The M2M device enters a sleep state before a physical layer acknowledgment (ACK) message is transmitted to the base station to indicate receipt of the packet.

Opportunistic decoding of transmissions on a forward link in a machine-to-machine wireless wide area network

Methods, systems, and devices for synchronizing a position location network. The methods, systems, and/or devices may provide for designating as a master AP one AP from a network. The master AP may broadcast synchronization signals, which other APs in the network may use to synchronize their respective oscillators and/or clocks. In some cases, the master AP and/or a network server (e.g., a tracking management server) may designate acting master APs. The acting master APs may, for example, broadcast synchronization signals to neighboring APs. The acting master APs and/or the master AP may maintain lists of synchronized APs, which may be transmitted among APs and/or to a network server.

High precision network synchronization in an indoor position location system

Methods, systems, and devices are described that provide for high precision synchronization between pairs of APs within a tracking area of a position location network. These tools and techniques may provide for incrementally synchronizing timers and oscillators located at respective APs. An AP may transmit a course frequency and timing acquisition signal that a second AP utilizes to estimate a frequency offset and/or time offset. The AP may transmit a subsequent fine frequency and timing acquisition signal which may be used to accurately adjust the estimated frequency offset and/or time offset of the second AP. The second AP may thus incrementally synchronize its oscillator(s) and/or timer(s). These techniques may be utilized over a multi-hop wireless network. The methods, systems, and devices may be applicable to single- and multi-floor location tracking systems.

High precision access point to access point synchronization in an indoor position location system

Methods, systems, and devices for channel estimation in a location tracking system are described. The methods, system, and devices may include tools and techniques for determining and/or designing perfect or semi-perfect sequences (including preamble sequences) for implementation in a location tracking system. Sequences having 2's exponent dimensionality, such as ternary sequences, may be determined and employed, which may help reduce implementation complexity and/or operating power consumption. Sequences may be determined using mean square error and/or maximum autocorrelation peak performance metrics.

The traffic slot map is broadcasted to one or more M2M devices during a traffic slot of a first forward link frame at a beginning of a traffic channel cycle.

Tools and techniques are described that may provide for automatically determining a coordinate set, which represents coordinates of at least three neighboring APs within a location tracking area. These techniques may be utilized at the time of the APs' deployment and/or when APs are moved or relocated to a new location. The methods, systems, and devices may be applicable to single- and multi-floor location tracking systems. Coordinate and/or coordinate sets of APs may be stored in a location tracking server, and they may used in determining a location of tracking tags with the location tracking area. The stored coordinates and/or coordinate sets may be updated as the location of APs change.

The methods, systems, and device may include tools and techniques for minimizing interference from adjacent samples at a receive filter, may include relaxing constraints at a transmitter. A receive filter or set of receive, or both, filters may be determined and utilized by specifying and or determining various transmitter, receiver, and channel characteristics. The receive filter and set of filters may be determined through an iterative approach involving one or more solution metrics.

An ultra-wideband (UWB) signal may be received from a tag. A noise estimation level above which the UWB signal is detectable may be determined using a noise estimation metric. A channel impulse response (IR) energy level may be determined using a channel energy metric. A leading edge window of the UWB signal may be identified. The leading edge window may be based on, at least in part, the noise estimation level and the channel IR energy level.

The frame being used for wireless M2M communications on a forward link in the M2M wireless WAN. The frame including no more than three channels. The physical layer frame including a first channel including paging channel, a second channel including a traffic channel, and a third channel including an acknowledgment (ACK) channel. A time division multiplexing (TDM) operation is performed on pilot symbols and data symbols to obtain a TDM pilot burst. At least one TDM pilot burst is inserted into each channel of the physical layer frame. The physical layer frame is transmitted on the forward link at a low data rate.

Coding scheme selection for low-bit-rate applications

A timing estimation system and methodology are provided. In particular, a first pilot is employed in conjunction with three acquisition stages. In the first stage, an attempt is made to observe the leading edge the correlation curve associated with the first pilot symbol. In the second stage, a determination is made to confirm a leading edge was detected in the first stage by attempting to observe a trailing edge the correlation curve. Furthermore, during this second stage, a frequency loop is updated to account for frequency offset. The third stage is for observing the trailing edge the curve if it was not already observed in stage two. Upon detection receipt the first pilot, a second pilot can subsequently be employed to acquire fine symbol timing.

Timing estimation in an OFDM receiver

A robust initial frame detection and symbol synchronization system and methodology are provided. In particular, a first pilot is employed in conjunction with three acquisition stages. In the first stage, an attempt is made to observe the leading edge of the correlation curve associated with the first pilot symbol. In the second stage, a determination is made as to whether a leading edge was detected in the first stage by attempting to observe a flat portion and/or trailing edge of the correlation curve. Furthermore, during this second stage, a frequency loop can be updated to account for frequency offset. The third stage is for observing the trailing edge of the curve if it was not already observed in stage two. Upon detection and confirmation of receipt of the first pilot, a second pilot can subsequently be employed to acquire fine symbol timing.
