The design and structure of a smart gas cylinder valve cap coupled with a smart MEMS mass flow meter, an embedded iBeacon or RFID reader and a remote data transmission module, which is capable of formulating an Internet of Things (IoT) system, is demonstrated in the disclosure. The smart gas cylinder cap(s) can be directly used to replace the mechanical valve handwheel or directly attached to the top of the existing mechanical handwheel as a smart data relay, and the cap(s) can either be applied to a single or plural numbers of gas cylinders while the smart gas flow meter shall communicate with the smart gas cap as well as to relay gas consumption data to a designated data center or a 'cloud' which can further interface with the users and suppliers of the gas cylinders. The system is beneficial for many of the existing gas cylinder applications such as construction gas process, medical gas racks, gas cylinders for food and beverage, and gas racks for electronics fabrication, where the gas cylinder status, gas consumption as well as cylinder logistics are critical for the applications.

An example method is provided and includes receiving a request to issue a facet; identifying an endpoint with a resource for which the facet is valid; identifying a set of actions capable of being performed on the resource; creating the facet using the set of actions; and issuing the facet. In other embodiments, the method may include receiving an initial request from an entity for the facet; determining whether the entity has authorization to make the initial request; and request a facet server module to issue the facet. In yet other embodiments, the facet has a condition, and the condition is at least one of a count of use, a time duration, and a periodic time duration. Additionally, in certain cases, determining whether the entity has authorization to make the initial request comprises evaluating validity information against a policy.

System and method for a facet security model

A method is provided in one example embodiment executed at a service metering framework (SMF) engine including a processor, and includes interfacing, by an event listener at the SMF engine, with an application being executed in a cloud by a remote client device, detecting a metering event associated with the application during execution of the application, receiving a value of at least one metering attribute associated with the metering event, and storing the at least one metering attribute and the value as a formatted metered record in a SMF database searchable according to the metering attribute. In a specific embodiment, the event listener exposes an application programming interface (API) of the SMF engine to the application to facilitate definitions of the metering event and the at least one metering attribute in the application.

System and method for a service metering framework in a network environment

An example method is provided and includes intercepting an action request from an entity for an action to be performed with respect to a resource in a cloud environment, where the action request comprises a resource facet that controls access to the resource. The method also includes determining whether the resource facet is valid for the action by evaluating a policy associated with the resource; and allowing the action.

System and method for a facet security framework

A method is provided in one example embodiment and includes causing generation of a metered record associated with a metering event of an application executed within a cloud-based computing system, the metered record including a metering attribute and a corresponding value, the corresponding value being determined substantially simultaneous to a runtime execution of the application, and facilitating searching for the metered record based on the metering attribute and the corresponding value of the metering attribute. In specific embodiments, the metered record is communicated using a REpresentational State Transfer (REST) Application Programming Interface (API). In an example embodiment, the notification of the metering event can be received by any one of a REST API, a Java Messaging Service listener, an Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) listener, or a metering plugin.
