Pyrimidinylbenzenesulfonyl chloride compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkyl; X is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkoxy, or halogen; Y is hydrogen or halogen; R.sup.3 is hydrogen, halogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; and R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkyl.
