Corrosion resistant electrodeposited chromium layers, processes for their electrodepositions and plating baths suitable for use therein are disclosed. The corrosion resistant chromium layers also are bright, adherent, smooth, hard, wear resistant, and exhibit a low coefficient of friction. Electrodeposition is carried out at both high and low currrent densities. The baths used comprise 450-650 g/l of chromic acid, 40-100 g/l of sulfoacetic acid and 0-4.5 g/l of sulfate ion and are substantially free of other carboxylic acids, fluoride ions, iodide ions, bromide ions and selenium ions. The baths used comprise 400-650 g/l of chromic acid, 40-100 g/l of sulfoacetic acid and 0-4.5 g/l of sulfate ion and are substantially free of other carboxylic acids, flouride ions, iodide ions, bromide ions and selenium ions.

An adherent, smooth electrodeposit of chromium is produced on a nodular cast iron substrate from a chromium plating bath. The desired deposit is provided herein by activating the substrate, subjecting the activated substrate to an ultrasonic treatment, and thereafter plating chromium from a chromium plating bath. The method is particularly effective for electrodeposition of chromium on such substrates from commercial high energy efficient chromium electroplating baths, where ordinarily only roughened deposits are obtained.

An activation solution is provided for forming adherent chromium electrodeposits on metal substrates, preferably ferrous metals such as cast iron, from high energy efficient chromium baths. The solution suitably is a mixture of sulfuric acid, added sulfate ion, and an inorganic oxidizing agent. A preferred solution contains 10 to 40% by volume concentrated sulfuric acid, 100 to 200 grams per liter of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate and 1 to 2 grams per liter of sodium nitrate.

Method for forming adherent, bright, smooth and hard chromium

An improved activation solution is provided for forming adherent chromium electrodeposits on metal substrates from high energy efficient chromium baths. The solution is a substantially neutral alkali metal sulfate solution.
