A combination battery and antenna includes a battery having a positive contact and a negative contact, at least one of the positive contact and the negative contact comprising an antenna coupled to a matching circuit and to a radio frequency choke, whereby direct current (DC) is supplied to a battery circuit and a radio frequency (RF) signal is supplied to an RF circuit, and at least one secondary radiator parasitically coupled to the at least one of the positive contact and the negative contact of the battery.

Battery antenna having a secondary radiator

A compact antenna system that provides an antenna capable of transmitting and/or receiving radio signals configured on a flexible substrate material supporting user control interface buttons. In an embodiment, an antenna may be formed on a user control interface button flex between the wire traces used to couple the user control interface buttons to a printed circuit board. In order to prevent the interference on the antenna that may be caused when current passes through the wire traces coupling the user control interface buttons to the printed circuit board, an RF choke (i.e., LC filter) circuit and bypass capacitors may be configured along each wire trace. In another embodiment, the wire trace coupling a user control interface button to the printed circuit board may be configured to serve the dual purposes of coupling the user control interface button to the printed circuit board; and functioning as an antenna capable of transmitting and/or receiving wireless radio signals.

User control interface button flex antenna system

A multiband antenna for a wireless device includes a housing base portion, housing antenna portion and a feed contact. The housing base portion configured to receive radio circuitry thereon and include a first peripheral edge and a first conductive material. The housing antenna portion spaced away from and substantially opposed to the housing base portion, including a second peripheral edge and a second conductive material. The housing base and antenna portions together forming an outermost housing of the mobile wireless device, enclosing the radio circuitry there between. The first and second peripheral edges forming opposed lengthwise edges of a slot having a width formed by a distance between the first and second peripheral edges. The feed contact coupling the housing base portion, the housing antenna portion and the radio circuitry for providing at least one driving frequency to at least the housing antenna portion from the radio circuitry.

Multipurpose antenna

A simple, compact multi-band PIFA including two arm portions, where one arm portion is grounded at two points to form a loop, a ground plane, and a plastic carrier and housing. The antenna radiates a same signal from both arm portions, at different efficiencies according to the radiated frequency and the effective length of each arm. The antenna is made from a single standard metal sheet by cutting it and is assembled with the metal ground plane and the other plastic parts. In one embodiment, the antenna is folded into a 3D U-shape to reduce its size for use in mobile communication devices. In another embodiment, the antenna is a penta-band antenna with return loss of &#x2212;6 B or better and measures 40&#xd7;8&#xd7;8 mm or smaller.

Compact multi-band planar inverted F antenna

A multiband antenna for a mobile device is disclosed. The mobile device includes a multiband antenna configured to communicate with a base station. The multiband antenna includes a ground plane, a ground plane extension, and a plurality of antenna arms. The ground plane, the ground plane extension, and the plurality of antenna arms are configured to communicate signals in multiple frequency bands, where the ground plane and the ground plane extension have a length proportional to approximately a quarter wavelength of a frequency in the multiple frequency bands. The mobile device further includes a modulator and demodulator configured to modulate signal for transmission and demodulate signal received from the base station, and a controller configured to control communication of signals using the multiband antenna and the modem.

Multiband antenna for a mobile device

A printed circuit board unbalanced dipole antenna is provided for a wireless communications device. Digital and/or transceiver circuits are mounted on first portion of the printed circuit board that is positioned within a main body of a chassis of the device. A radiator is formed from a printed conductive line overlying a circuit board dielectric layer of a second portion of the printed circuit board. The printed conductive line has a first end for connection to the digital and/or transceiver circuits via a transmission line, and a second un-terminated end. The circuit board dielectric layer is positioned with an antenna section of the chassis that extends outward from the main body of the chassis. To shorten the overall length of the antenna, the printed conductive line is an alternating pattern of a plurality of first sections with a first orientation and a plurality of second sections with a second orientation. The printed conductive line may be formed on a single side of the dielectric layer, or alternatively, on a first and second side of the dielectric layer and electrically connected by a plurality of vias.

Printed stubby unbalanced dipole antenna

A system and method are provided for diversifying radiated electromagnetic communications in a wireless communication device having a plurality of embedded antennas. The method comprises sensing conducted electromagnetic transmission line signals communicated by the antennas, selecting between the antennas in response to sensing the transmission line signals, and modifying antenna electrical performance characteristics in response to sensing the transmission line signals. In some aspects sensing transmission line signals includes sensing transmission line signal power levels. For example, the power levels of the radiated signals conducted on the transmission lines can be sensed or the transmission line signal power levels of transmitted signals reflected by the antennas are sensed.

Wireless telephone antenna diversity system and method

A wireless communication device comprises an N-plexer, that is, a multi-band device, connected to a single antenna for receiving multiple communication bands on the single antenna. The N-plexer includes a receive band pass filter of a receive signal path to receive a signal in a certain frequency bandwidth for each of the multiple of communication bands. The N-plexer also includes a GPS receiver filter for receiving GPS signals. The communication device also comprises an amplifier coupled with each of the plurality of receive signal paths. The amplifier is configured to amplify the receive signals associated with each of the plurality of receive signal paths.

N-plexer systems and methods for use in a wireless communications device

A system and method are provided for regulating the electrical length of an antenna. The method comprises: communicating transmission line signals at a predetermined frequency between a transceiver and an antenna; sensing transmission line signals; and, modifying the antenna electrical length in response to sensing the transmission line signals. Sensing transmission line signals typically means sensing transmission line signal power levels. In some aspects, the antenna impedance is modified. Alternately, it can be stated that the transmission line signal strength is optimized between the transceiver and the antenna. More specifically, communicating transmission line signals at a predetermined frequency between a transceiver and an antenna includes accepting the transmission line signal from the transceiver at an antenna port. Then, sensing transmission line signals includes measuring the transmission line signal reflected from the antenna port.

System and method for regulating antenna electrical length

A wireless communication device comprises a plurality of receive signal paths, each of the receive signal paths is configured to receive signals in a certain frequency bandwidth. The communication device also comprises an amplifier coupled with each of the plurality of receive signal paths. The amplifier is configured to amplify the receive signals associated with each of the plurality of receive signal paths.

Systems and methods for reusing a low noise amplifier in a wireless communications device

A system and method is provided for full-duplex antenna impedance matching. The method comprises: effectively resonating a first antenna at a frequency selectable first channel in a first frequency band; generating a first antenna impedance at the first channel frequency; effectively resonating a second antenna at a frequency selectable second channel in the first frequency band; generating a second antenna impedance at the second channel frequency; supplying a first conjugate impedance match at the first channel frequency; and, supplying a second conjugate impedance match at the second channel frequency. For example, the first antenna may be used for transmission, while the second antenna is used for received communications. The antennas effectively resonant in response to: supplying frequency selectable conjugate impedance matches to the antennas; generating frequency selectable antenna impedances; and/or selecting the frequency of antenna resonance.

Full-duplex antenna system and method

A printed circuit board unbalanced dipole antenna is provided for a wireless communications telephone. Digital and/or transceiver circuits are mounted on a wireless telephone circuit board. In addition, a radiator is formed from a printed conductive line overlying the circuit board dielectric layer, with an end for connection to a transmission line and an unterminated end. To shorten the overall length of the antenna, the radiator is formed in a series of rectangular or zig-zag meanders with a plurality of first sections with a first orientation and a plurality of second sections with a second orientation, orthogonal, or approximately orthogonal to the first orientation. In some aspects, the radiator first sections overlie the dielectric layer first side and the radiator second sections overlie the dielectric layer second side. Then, the radiator first and second sections are connected with a plurality of vias.

A dual-band antenna matching system and a method for dual-band impedance matching are provided. The method comprises: accepting a frequency-dependent impedance from an antenna; and, selectively supplying a conjugate impedance match for the antenna at either a first and a second communication band, or a third and a fourth communication band. More specifically, the method comprises: tuning a first tuning circuit to a first frequency; and, simultaneously tuning a second tuning circuit to a second frequency. In response, a conjugate match is supplied to the antenna in the first communication band in response to the first frequency. Simultaneously, the antenna is matched in the second communication band in response to the second frequency. When the first tuning circuit is tuned to a third frequency, and the second tuning circuit is tuned to a fourth frequency, then conjugate matches are supplied for the third and fourth communication bands, responsive to the third and fourth frequencies, respectively.

System and method for dual-band antenna matching

A sub-band antenna matching method and an antenna matching system for selectively matching a communication bandwidth segment impedance have been provided. The method comprises: accepting a frequency-dependent impedance from an antenna; and, selectively supplying a conjugate impedance match for the antenna at a sub-band of a first communication band. In some aspects, the method selectively supplies a conjugate impedance match for the antenna at a sub-band of a second communication band. More specifically, the method comprises: tuning a first tuning circuit to a first frequency; simultaneously tuning a second tuning circuit to a second frequency to match the antenna at a low end of the first communication band. Likewise, the first tuning circuit is tuned to a third frequency and the second tuning circuit is tuned to a fourth frequency to match the antenna at a high end of the first communication band in response to the third and fourth frequencies.

System and method for impedance matching an antenna to sub-bands in a communication band

A MEMS antenna is provided comprising a dielectric layer, and a conductive line radiator formed overlying the dielectric layer including at least one selectively connectable MEMS conductive section to vary the mechanical (physical) length of the radiator. The antenna may include a plurality of selectively connectable MEMS conductive sections and a plurality of fixed-length conductive section. The MEMS conductive sections may be parallely aligned along the radiator width, and/or parallely aligned along the radiator length. For example, the radiator may have a first length formed in response to connecting a first MEMS conductive section, and a second length, shorter than the first length, formed in response to disconnecting the first MEMS conductive section. Then, the radiator first length would be an effective quarter-wavelength odd multiple at a first frequency, and the second length would be an effective quarter-wavelength odd multiple at a second frequency.
