Fuel dispensing nozzle

A vapor recovery nozzle is disclosed in which the main body of the nozzle has the vapor passage located above the fluid passage, so that the fluid valve is separated from the top of the nozzle by the vapor passage. Thus the valve may only be removed through the bottom of the nozzle by removing the trigger mechanism and removing the vacuum tripping mechanism which is also connected to the trigger mechanism. Removal of the tripping mechanism is also made easily determinable by the use of a soft aluminum seal over the top opening of the trigger mechanism. The tripping mechanism is responsive to displacement of the vapor recovery shroud to prevent dispensing fuel unless the nozzle is in the fill tank. Other improvements to prior art vapor recovery nozzles include an improved trigger mechanism having a camming surface to engage the stem of the main valve.

Vapor recovery nozzle

A vapor valve is useful in a vapor recovery nozzle of the type used to dispense fuel to motor vehicles. In response to the stopping of liquid through the valve, the valve stops the flow of vapor through an adjacent passage. The valve operates using coupled permanent magnet actuators.

Magnetically actuated vapor valve

A hand-operated dispensing nozzle control valve particularly suited for metered delivery of fuel. The control valve includes a poppet and actuator to initially tilt the poppet on its seat. The actuator arrangement greatly improves controllability as measured by a substantial decrease in required operating force and a reduction in the minimum quantity of liquid which can be dispensed.

Low flow control nozzle

A fluid dispensing nozzle having an operating lever with a lever locating means for assisting the operator in holding the hand operating lever open at one or more fixed locations. The lever may be held at a predetermined location, using a relatively small amount of effort to hold the lever. The lever will return to closed position when hand pressure on the lever is released. The nozzle is especially useful for dispensing fluid at lower than maximum flow rate in order to avoid splashing and spillage. It is especially suited for use in self-service gasoline service stations.

Fluid dispensing nozzle

An automatic dispensing nozzle of the type incorporating a vapor recovery system wherein the sealing seat for preventing the escape of recovered vapors from the system when the nozzle is not in use is located at the position along the length of the discharge tube which is not located within the filling tube of a fluid storage tank in use. The sealing seat for the vapor recovery shroud is located rearwardly from the outer end of the discharge tube and seal closure means is disposed within the shroud and spaced a substantial distance rearwardly from the outer end of the shroud to sealingly engage the sealing seat when the shroud is in its extended position. A mechanism is also provided for preventing the operation of the dispenser nozzle until the vapor recovery system of the nozzle is in communication with the interior of the tank which is to be filled by the nozzle. This mechanism consists of a simple magnetically operated mechanism for opening and closing a secondary vent passage in the vent tube of an automatic nozzle of the type having a vacuum operated release mechanism for automatically closing the flow control valve. The secondary vent passage communicates between the primary vent passage and the liquid discharge passage in the nozzle. Closure means for closing the secondary vent passage is mounted within the discharge tube for movement between a first position in which the secondary vent passage is opened and a second position in which the secondary vent passage is closed and magnetic activator means is carried by the shroud for moving the closure means to said open position when the shroud is extended whereby normal venting may be disrupted and to the closed position when the shroud is retracted, thereby permitting normal venting of the vacuum operated release mechanism.

In a liquid loading system for the gravity loading of a liquid storage tank from a tank truck the present invention provides an improved mechanism for interrupting the flow of liquid when the level of liquid in a tank rises above a predetermined level. The structure includes a valve in the fill line which is moveable between an open position and closed position. A pressure responsive latch means is provided for releasably locking the valve in the open position. A vent passage communicates between the pressure responsive latch means and a predetermined level below the upper end of the underground storage tank. A vacuum passage communicates between the vent passage and a vacuum source in the fill line. The flow of liquid through the liquid fill line generates the vacuum in the fill line in the area of the vacuum passage. Until the level of liquid in the underground tank rises above the end of the vent passage, atmosphere from within the tank is drawn into the vacuum passage from the vent passage. When the level of liquid in the tank rises above the end of the vent passage the vacuum pressure is applied to the pressure responsive latch means to release the valve which moves automatically to the closed position to interrupt the flow of liquid.

Automatic shut off for gravity filling system for liquid storage tanks

A pressure relief valve which will move to a fully open position as soon as a predetermined pressure is established within a vessel in which the valve is mounted. The valve comprises a housing mountable in the vessel with its inner end opening inwardly of the vessel and its outer end opening outwardly of the vessel. A pressure relief passage opens through the housing and a valve member is slidably mounted with respect to the housing for movement between a first position closing the pressure relief passage and a second position in which the pressure relief passage is open to permit full flow through the pressure relief passage. Locking means is provided for releasably interlocking the valve member and the housing to retain the valve member in its first position. Pressure responsive lock release means is mounted on the valve and movable in response to an increase in pressure above a predetermined minimum pressure to release the lock means to free the valve member and thereby permit the valve member to move to the full flow first position without requiring any increase in pressure in the vessel above the predetermined pressure.

Pressure relief valve

In a liquid storage tank such as an underground storage tank for liquid fuels having a liquid input passage and a vent passage, the improvement of vapor recovery passage means opening outwardly from the tank and connectible to an external vapor recovery system, the vapor recovery passage being blocked by liquid flow when the level of liquid in the tank rises above a predetermined level to prevent the discharge of vapor therethrough, signal means communicating with the vent passage means and operative in response to an increase in pressure in the vent line caused by the blockage of the vapor recovery line during the filling of the tank to provide a signal indicating that the tank has been filled to a predetermined level.

Vapor recovery and vent signal system

An automatic shut-off nozzle incorporating a vapor recovery system for recovering the displaced vapors from a gasoline storage tank or the like as the tank is being filled by the nozzle wherein the nozzle is automatically shut-off when the pressure within the vapor recovery system increases above a predetermined minimum pressure. The nozzle incorporates a latching mechanism which is releasable in response to the increase in pressure in the vapor recovery system and which is also responsive to a loss of vacuum pressure resulting from the level of the liquid in the storage tank rising above a predetermined level with respect to the nozzle. The nozzle is constructed such that the ambient pressure in the main diaphragm chamber corresponds to the pressure of the vapor recovery line so that the release mechanism for the slide is not as sensitive to the pressure in the gasoline storage tank. The nozzle also includes an improved vapor recovery shroud which incorporates a fulcrum support carried by the body of the nozzle which serves to direct the end sealing ring of the shroud into engagement with the end of the filling tube of a gasoline storage tank or the like.

Vapor collecting nozzle

In a gasoline or like tank truck, a roll over valve is provided which permits opening of the emergency valve of the tank truck without opening the vent valve. The roll over valve is incorporated in the air lines extending between the source of compressed air and the emergency valve. The roll over valve includes a valve closure member movable between a first position in which the emergency valve is activated by the same air pressure source as the vent valve and a second position in which the emergency valve is adapted to be activated by an independent source of air without permitting the independent source to activate the vent valve.
