Devices such as electronic book readers, televisions, and so forth may use reflective display technologies. Described herein are devices and methods for ambient light sensing for use in conjunction with displays. A light guide panel is coupled to a light sensor to measure ambient light impinging on the light guide panel. Where the display is reflective, the light guide panel may be configured to provide for illumination of the display.

Ambient light sensing for display

A user device may include a transmission power manager to control a transmission power level of a wireless transceiver based on a location of a human body proximate the user device as detected by a proximity sensor. In response to at least one of a power up of the user device or initialization of a wireless transceiver, the transmission power manager may restrict a transmission power level of the wireless transceiver to one of a plurality of power states. The transmission power manager may then operate to detect a step in proximity sensor data obtained by the proximity sensor. Then, in response to detecting the step in the proximity data, the transmission power manager may restricting the transmission power level of the wireless transceiver and determine a proximity threshold value based at least in part on the detected step and the proximity sensor data.

Managing a transmission power level

Methods and systems are described for determining whether any one of three or more proximity test conditions is met using measurements from a plurality of proximity electrodes located relative to an antenna of a user device and reducing a transmit power level to be used by the antenna when any one of the three or more proximity test conditions is met. A user device obtains measurements from the proximity electrodes, checks the three or more proximity test conditions, and instructs a transmit power manager to reduce a transmit power level to transmit data when any one of the three or more proximity test conditions is met.

Proximity sensor algorithms to control transmit power of a user device

A method and system for facilitating communication, generally called pairing, between a wireless handheld device and a electronic communication device is disclosed. The method includes transmitting a line-of-sight signal from the wireless handheld device to a electronic communication device. The line-of-sight signal serves to identify the wireless handheld device. This transmission results in a received line-of-sight signal at the electronic communication device. The method also includes enabling a non-line-of-sight communication between the wireless handheld device and the electronic communication device. The non-line-of-sight communication is enabled on the basis of the received line-of-sight signal.

Method and system for pairing electronic devices

A jaw tracking device, which fits entirely in the mouth and can be attached to conventional removable dental appliances, tracks the location and movement of the lower jaw with high precision and speed when the mouth is closed or nearly closed by recording the projection of light from a light emitting diode, laser diode, or fiberoptic source fixed to the lower dental arch onto one or two position sensitive detectors (PSDS) fixed to the upper dental arch. Since the system acquires data quickly enough to record the minute deflections of the lower jawbone which occur each time the jaw is closed eccentrically, it can be used with acoustic sensors attached to the individual teeth in order to analyze a person's bite. Since each PSD relies on only four outputs, its data can be easily transmitted by telemetry so that it can be used to track the location of the jaw during sleep without requiring wires protruding from the mouth of the sleeping subject.
