A differential pressure transducer utilizing fluid-filled chambers as pressure transfer linkage to an isolated, fluid-filled aneroid sensing system. Isolation diaphragms are spread by means of internal fluid pressure fill of transfer chambers, thus providing elevated line pressure mode and pressure-biased operation. Construction offers media isolation from sensitive interior elements of the transducer. Material to come into physical contact with a pressure medium may thus be chosen for specific application. Dual, nested aneroid sensors cooperated to produce a linear displacement in response to an applied pressure differential. A cantilever beam assembly responds to the linear displacement so caused by flexing in a degree proportional to the applied pressure differential. The fluid-filled sensing system may comprise nested, aneroid capsule diaphragms, carrying a sufficient amount of incompressible fluid to support the capsule diaphragm for high line pressure use. The nested, aneroid capsule diaphragms are thus also spread by the fluid pressure, thereby placing the pressure deflection of the aneroids in an elevated line pressure mode and providing pressure-biased operation. Strain gages respond to the flexing of the cantilever beam assembly, thereby having an electrical signal induced in them proportional to the applied differential pressure as sensed by the aneroid capsule diaphragm sensors.

Media independent differential pressure transducer

A potentiometer contained within a housing is operated from the outside by means of an operating member which extends inward through an orifice in a housing wall. The operating member engages the potentiometer drive stem with the aid of an O-ring slip clutch, and includes a flange which is spring-urged against the interior housing wall to inhibit internal explosions from propagating to the outside.

Explosion inhibiting potentiometer assembly and drive mechanism therefor

First and second pressure sensitive diaphragm assemblies are mutually spaced at a substantially constant distance by a rigid member, whereby the diaphragm assemblies flex in unison in response to imposed pressure differentials. A longitudinally rigid but transversely flexible and resilient means such as a strut wire couples the diaphragm assemblies with a deflectable motion sensing means such as a cantilever beam bearing at least one strain gage. The coupling means flexingly accommodates to normal transverse deflection movements made by the motion sensing means, thereby significantly reducing both the strain on the motion sensing means and distortions in the readout obtained therefrom. In a preferred embodiment a hollow tube is employed to space the diaphragm assemblies. A motion sensing beam projects inwardly through an opening in the tube and is joined therein to a strut wire which extends inside the tube from one of the diaphragm assemblies. The strut wire flexes transversely when the diaphragm assemblies flex to a new position, permitting the beam to move in a normal arcuate path.
