The invention provides methods for diagnosing and treating amyloid-related conditions and compounds useful for the same. The invention provides for detecting, imaging, monitoring, diagnosing, and treating conditions characterized by the binding or aggregation of amyloid fibrils. More particularly, the invention relates to using quinolinehydrazone compounds for diagnosing and treating amyloidotic conditions and also as an antioxidant.

Compounds and methods for diagnosing and treating amyloid-related conditions

Among other things, assays and methods of diagnosis and treatment of disease (e.g., Alzheimer's disease) based on the surprising observation of an interaction between amyloid &bgr; or its aggregates with the sodium channel are provided. In particular, methods to identify compounds that modulate this interaction are provided, as well as methods of diagnosis and treatment that are based on this interaction.

An improved method and composition for promoting hair growth in mammals for treating various forms of alopecia or male pattern baldness comprising the concomitant administration of potassium channel openers, such as minoxidil, cromakalim, pinacidil, or a compound selected frown the classes of s-triazine, thiane-1-oxide, benzopyran and pyridinopyran compounds; and a 5.alpha.-reductase inhibitors, 17.beta.-(N-tert-butylcarbamoyl)-4-aza-5-.alpha.-androst-1-en-3-one. The method comprises administering an effective amount of the potassium channel opener and administering an effective amount of the 17.beta.-(N-tert-butylcarbamoyl)-4-aza-5-.alpha.-androst-1-en-3-one whereby the promotion of hair growth is increase over the sole administration of the potassium channel opener.

Stimulation of hair growth with minoxidil and a 5.alpha.-reductase

A method to induce or enhance an erection or treat erectile dysfunction through the administration of a pyridylguanidine compound, preferably, N-cyano-N'(1,1-dimethyl propyl)-N'-3-pyridinyl guanidine, in low doses to the penis. Administration can be by injection into the corpus cavernosum of the penis or transdermal application.
