A vortex chamber fluid pulser selectively produces pressure pulses in fluid flowing therethrough by the alternating insertion and retraction of a flow-disrupting tab into and out of an annular vortex chamber having an inlet and a pair of opposed axial outlets. Insertion of the tab disrupts the normally radial flow of fluid through the chamber and outlets causing the flow to become vortical; retraction of the tab causes a second pressure pulse as the flow returns to radial, sending a sequence of pressure pulses capable of carrying encoded signals to a transducer remotely located in the fluid.

Vortex chamber mud pulser

Injection of atomized coal slurry fuel into an engine combustion chamber is achieved at relatively low pressures by means of a vortex swirl nozzle. The outlet opening of the vortex nozzle is considerably larger than conventional nozzle outlets, thereby eliminating major sources of failure due to clogging by contaminants in the fuel. Control fluid, such as air, may be used to impart vorticity to the slurry and/or purge the nozzle of contaminants during the times between measured slurry charges. The measured slurry charges may be produced by a diaphragm pump or by vortex valves controlled by a separate control fluid. Fluidic circuitry, employing vortex valves to alternatively block and pass cool slurry fuel flow, is disclosed.

Fuel injection of coal slurry using vortex nozzles and valves

A fluidic pulsing device is disclosed which comprises at least one fluid lifier and several vortex valve restrictors. One or more amplifiers direct fluid flow to the several vortex valves, which are arranged in parallel fashion. Such an arrangement allows for optimization of design geometries, and therefore, optimization of performance, despite the fact that the physical dimensions of the apparatus may be severely restricted.

Fluidic mud pulse telemetry transmitter

A high capacity fluidic valve is disclosed which is useful for creating psure pulses in a drill string for communicating diagnostic information from the bottom of a well bore to the surface during drilling. The device of the present invention comprises essentially a vortex chamber having an element therein which is capable of rapidly changing the flow through the chamber from radial to vortical. Flow throttling action in the valve is produced by the vortical flow in the chamber, thereby producing pressure pulses in the fluid stream flowing through the valve.

Fluidic valve and pulsing device

An electro-hydraulic (EH) actuator for converting electrical inputs into hydraulic output signals is described. The actuator features a pressure balanced design which permits operation at high absolute pressures without performance degradation. Internal portions of the EH actuator are filled with a non-conducting fluid, while a flexible diaphragm provides a movable interface between the fluid and the environment in order to equalize the internal and external pressures on the actuator.

Electro fluidic actuator

A liquid telemetry system is disclosed useful for transmitting data through a fluid body by means of pulses in the fluid. To generate the pulses in the fluid the system utilizes a bi-stable fluid amplifier in conjunction with a vortex valve. Control input signals direct the flow of fluid from the bi-stable amplifier into the vortex valve in such manner as to selectively impede the flow of fluid through the vortex valve. The resulting changes in fluid flow rates generate pulses within the fluid body.

Fluidic mud pulser

A telemetry system is disclosed which utilizes a fluid feedback oscillator n conjunction with a flow restricting device in order to generate pulses in a fluid. Means are provided to turn the oscillator on or off or to vary the frequency of oscillation, thereby permitting the transmission of information by means of the fluid pulses.

Fluid oscillator

A fluid telemetry system is disclosed which utilizes an improved pulsing ice. The pulser comprises a bistable fluid amplifier. Both outlets of the bistable fluid amplifier communicate tangentially with a vortex chamber. A pulse in the fluid entering the amplifier may be produced each time the fluid flow is diverted from one outlet to the other.

Fluidic pulser

A hydrostatic seismic sensor including a sensing mass suspended on a defoble reservoir containing a sensing fluid and a differential pressure transducer to measure the pressure in the reservoir.

Hydrostatic seismic sensor
