A first apparatus for displaying drawings comprises a housing having an aperture, a drawing sheet comprising electro-optic material movable through the aperture between closed and open positions, and a writing device for writing on the sheet as it moved between its closed and open positions. A second apparatus comprises a display member having a viewing surface, support means for supporting this display member above a floor, an electro-optic medium disposed on the display member, and a movable writing head for writing on the electro-optic medium. Another display comprises an optic medium with two display states visible through a viewing surface. A touch screen is disposed on the opposed side of the optic medium from the viewing surface, and the optic medium is deformable such that pressure applied to the viewing surface will be transmitted to the touch screen.

A docking unit for a portable computer has a wedge-shaped. As a result, a portable computer, which has been installed on the docking unit, is inclined toward the user. This places the keyboard of the portable computer at a more comfortable angle for typing. Thus, the portable computer's keyboard remains usable even when it is installed on the docking unit. Moreover, the wedge-shape need not substantially raise the height of the keyboards since the leading edge is relatively thin, keeping the computer's keyboard as a comfortable height.

A removable electronic module of this invention includes an electronic device, such as a memory storage drive, having an electrical device connector for mating with an electrical bay connector in a computer. The module also includes a connector guide mounted about the electrical device connector. The connector guide is adapted to engage the electrical bay connector to align the electrical device connector with the electrical bay connector. The module further includes an auxiliary device guide positioned apart from the connector guide. The auxiliary device guide is adapted to engage an auxiliary bay guide to align the connector guide with the electrical bay connector.

A docking system, including a portable computer and a docking unit, operates by latching the portable computer to the docking unit. A docking bay arrangement is used so that the portable computer's keyboard is accessible and usable by the user. A latch control system, which is controlled from the portable computer, provides security by preventing removal of the portable computer from the docking unit by unauthorized persons. This prevents theft, since the docking unit in turn is secured to the work area by a cable system.

A portable computer docking unit comprises a computer docking bay for receiving a portable computer on the docking unit. The docking unit also has a charging cradle that charges a battery of the portable computer. As a result, even if the battery installed in the portable computer can be charged while the computer is connected to the docking unit, an additional battery can be simultaneously brought to a full state of charge in the charging cradle, thereby providing the user with a backup battery to effectively double the time over which the portable computer can be operated without access to an alternating current power source. Preferably, the charging cradle is located under the computer docking bay. Installation of the portable computer, thus, prevents physical access to the battery in the charging cradle. A latching system is provided for securing the portable computer to the docking bay. This combination of features has the effect of providing security for any battery in the charging cradle. Preferably, since the portable computer can only be disconnected from the docking bay through software input of a password and the docking unit is secured to the desk, theft of either the portable computer or the battery in the charging cradle is prevented.

A locking mechanism for facilitating connection between a first housing and a second housing. The locking mechanism mounted in the mounting region of the second housing and includes a plunger mounted for movement up to an extended position, a biasing device urging the plunger toward the extended position, a catch spring, and a release button having a ramp, such release button being mounted on the second housing for back and forth movement in a direction transverse to the direction of the plunger and along a path that brings the ramp into contact with the catch spring when the release button is moved forward.

Portable multimedia docking module

A heat dissipating arrangement in a portable computer uses a copper slug disposed between a heat-generating central processing unit (CPU) chip and the underside of a metallic keyboard baseplate. The slug also extends through a copper-plated hole in a printed circuit (PC) board, and is either soldered to the copper plating or press-fit into the hole to enhance heat transfer between the slug and the PC board. Small through-holes extend through the PC board and the copper plating next to the opening. These through-holes connect the copper plating to several layers of etch within the PC board, so that these layers act like fins on a heat sink to increase heat transfer away from the CPU.
