A process for production of crystalline rebaudioside B from rebaudioside A is described. Additionally, four distinct crystal polymorphic forms of rebaudioside B are described, as well as methods for converting from one crystal polymorphic form of rebaudioside B to another crystal polymorphic form of rebaudioside B.

Crystalline forms of rebaudioside B

The present invention provides methods to treat mixtures containing natural rebaudioside A (Reb A), rebaudioside B (Reb B), and rebaudioside D (Reb D), synthetic counterparts of these, and/or derivatives of the natural or synthetic embodiments obtain one or more of these glycosides in more pure form. In many embodiments, the invention can be used to process glycoside mixtures obtained at least in part from natural sources such as theplant. This allows, for instance, the recovery of a product including Reb A material in more pure form relative to Reb B material or Reb D material. As an alternative or in addition to recovery of the purified Reb A material, a product including Reb B material and/or Reb D material in more pure form relative to Reb A material can be obtained.

Methods to treat mixtures of glycosides to obtain one or more of these glycosides in more pure form

The invention provides methods of purifying rebaudioside A from a mixture comprising glycosides of the plant. The methods of the invention are useful for preparing highly pure rebaudioside A compositions from crudestarting compositions that are typically considerably lower in rebaudioside A concentration. The highly pure rebaudioside A compositions are useful as non-caloric sweeteners in edible or chewable compositions such as food, beverages, medicine, candy, chewing gum, and the like.

A process and system for continuous crystallization of a compound using antisolvent addition in which a solution is prepared with an organic compound and a solvent. An antisolvent is added to the solution in a continuous plug flow system comprising at least one process module. The antisolvent can be added in multiple addition points such that the overall amount of antisolvent added to the continuous plug flow reactor remains fixed. The multiple addition point technique provides every process module with an equal volume of antisolvent. Finally, crystals are recovered from the slurry upon exiting the system. Applying a strong static DC electric field to supersaturated aqueous glycine solutions resulted in the nucleation of the &#x3b3; polymorph attributed to the electric-field induced orientation of the highly polar glycine molecules in large preexisting solute clusters, helping them organize into a crystalline structure. A method to induce crystallization and to prepare polymorphs and/or morphologies of materials by using a static electric field to cause nucleation and crystal growth to occur in a supersaturated solution in such a way as to obtain a crystal structure that would not normally appear without the use of the static electric field. Aqueous glycine solutions were prepared by combining solid glycine and water. Supersaturated solutions were generated by heating the tubes to 62-64&#xb0; C. and holding them at that temperature in an ultrasonicator overnight. Once the glycine was completely dissolved, the solutions were slowly cooled to room temperature. A chamber was constructed consisting of two brass electrodes separated by a 5 mm insulating gap, with a hole drilled down through the center, parallel to the gap-electrode interface, with a diameter large enough to accommodate the test tube. A DC voltage was applied across the electrodes, large enough to produce electric fields in the range of 400,000 to 800,000 V/m. Tests tubes containing the aged solutions were placed in the high-voltage chamber. Exposure of the aged solutions to fields of 600,000 V/m resulted in crystallization typically within 30-90 min. The onset of nucleation was observed visually by the formation of a needle-shaped crystallite.

A method for the recovery of high purity zinc oxide products, and optionally iron-carbon feedstocks, from industrial waste streams containing zinc oxide and/or iron.
