The present invention relates to modified alkyd polymers and compositions thereof, in which the alkyd polymers are modified with polyol-containing latex compositions and/or diol-containing latex compositions. Methods of making modified condensation polymers

The invention pertains to methods for preparing modified condensation polymers wherein the steps include: (a) preparing a polymer colloid system comprising a first polymer dispersed in a liquid continuous phase; (b) introducing the polymer colloid system into a glycolysis reaction medium prior to or during a glycolysis reaction wherein the glycolysis reaction medium comprises a polyester, copolyester, polyesteramide, polycarbonate or a mixture thereof; wherein the glycolysis reaction medium optionally comprises a diol component; and polymerizing the fully or partially glycolyzed polyester, copolyester, polyesteramide, polycarbonate or mixture thereof, thereby providing a condensation polymer/first polymer matrix.

The invention provides a method of making an amide-type polymer/first polymer blend comprising the steps of: a) preparing a polymer colloid system comprising a first polymer dispersed in a liquid continuous phase; b) introducing the polymer colloid system into an amide-type polymerization reaction medium prior to or during the reaction, wherein the reaction medium comprises 1) a diacid component and a diamine component, an oligomer of a diacid and a diamine component, or a mixture thereof; and c) polymerizing the components of b)1, thereby providing an amide-type polymer/first polymer blend. Polymer blends made by the methods herein are also provided.

The invention herein provides a silicone polymer emulsion comprising: a) a silicone polymer; and b) a surfactant; and a liquid continuous phase comprising a diol, wherein the diol comprises from about 25 to about 100% by weight of the continuous phase. Further provided is a method of making a condensation polymer/silicone polymer blend comprising the steps of: a) preparing a silicone/polymer emulsion comprising a silicone polymer in a liquid continuous phase; b) introducing the silicone polymer emulsion into a condensation polymerization reaction medium prior to or during the condensation polymerization reaction, wherein the condensation polymerization reaction medium comprises (1) a diacid, di-isocyanate, dialkyl carbonate, diaryl carbonate, dihalo carbonate or a mixture thereof, wherein the continuous phase, the condensation polymerization reaction medium or both comprises a diol component; and c) polymerizing the diol and component b(1) thereby forming a condensation polymer/silicone polymer blend. Polymer blends comprising a condensation polymer/silicone polymer blend are also provided.

In one aspect, the invention provides a method of making a nylon 6/silicone polymer blend comprising the steps of preparing a silicone polymer emulsion comprising a silicone polymer dispersed in a liquid continuous phase; introducing the silicone polymer emulsion into a nylon 6 ring opening reaction either prior to or during the nylon 6 ring opening reaction medium wherein the reaction medium comprises caprolactam; and opening the ring and reacting the caprolactam, thereby providing a nylon 6/silicone polymer emulsion blend. Nylon 6/silicone polymer blends are also provided by the invention herein.

Diol latex compositions and modified condensation polymers

This invention relates to PET copolymer composition that have both 1,4-cyclohexanedimethal (CHDM) and isophthalic acid moieties copolymerized. These compositions have better oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier properties than either PET homopolymer or CHDM-modified PET copolymers. These copolymer compositions are useful for packaging applications (such as carbonated soft drink bottles) requiring barrier properties to oxygen and carbon dioxide at least as good or better than PET homopolymer.

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) copolymers containing both

Homopolymers of olefin monomers having polar functional groups, and copolymers of these monomers with each other and with non-polar olefins and optionally carbon monoxide are disclosed. The polymers can be prepared by contacting the corresponding monomers with a transition metal catalyst under comparatively mild conditions; this preserves at least some of the polar functional groups in the resulting polymer. The polymers are suitable for processing in conventional extrusion processes, and can be formed into high barrier sheets or films, or low molecular weight resins for use in synthetic waxes in wax coatings or as emulsions.
