Compositions and methods for a melt processable semicrystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) incorporating phthalazinone and 4,4'-biphenol as comonomer units are described herein. The polymers are resistant to and insoluble in common organic solvents and liquids as well as in aggressive organic solvents such as chloroform and chlorinated liquids. The polymers are melt processable via techniques such as extrusion, injection molding, and compression molding. The semicrystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) containing phthalazinone comonomer units have properties which make them suitable for manufacturing high temperature resistant molded systems and other articles.

A catalyst precursor comprising (A) a microporous support; (B) a non-noble metal precursor; and (C) a pore-filler, wherein the micropores of the microporous support are filled with the pore-filler and the non-noble metal precursor so that the micropore surface area of the catalyst precursor is substantially smaller than the micropore surface area of the support when the pore-filler and the non-noble metal precursor are absent is provided. Also, a catalyst comprising the above catalyst precursor, wherein the catalyst precursor has been pyrolysed so that the micropore surface area of the catalyst is substantially larger than the micropore surface area of catalyst precursor, with the proviso that the pyrolysis is performed in the presence of a gas that is a nitrogen precursor when the microporous support, the non-noble metal precursor and the pore-filler are not nitrogen precursors is also provided. Methods of producing the catalyst precursor and the catalyst are provided.

Catalyst precursors, catalysts and methods of producing same

The present invention provides high temperature compositions comprising blends of a first polymer, poly(aryl ether ketone phthalazinone)s, and a second polymer, selected from poly(aryl ether ketone)s, poly(aryl ketone)s, poly(ether ether ketone)s, poly(ether ketone ketone)s, or polybenzimidazoles, thermoplastic polyimides, polyetherimides, poly(aryl ether sulfone)s, poly(phenylene sulfide)s, and mixtures thereof. The compositions have improved high temperature characteristics, e.g., improved high temperature load capability and improved high temperature melt processibility.

Polymers and copolymers containing 1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2(3H)-one units have been synthesized under conditions generally used for the synthesis of poly(aryl ether)s. 1H- benzo[d]imidazol-2(3H)-one behaves like a biphenol in the polymerization reaction. The soluble homopolymer has a very high glass transition temperature (348&#xb0; C.), good thermal stability, and forms flexible transparent films. Because of the low molecular weight (134.14) of the benzoimidazolone monomer in the copolymer formed with 4,4'-biphenol that contains 30 mole % of the benzimidazolone unit, only 8.9 weight % is required to raise the Tg of the poly(arlyl ether)sulfone from 220&#xb0; C. to 269&#xb0; C.

A poly(phthalazinone sulfone) composition for molded articles having such characteristics as high temperature resistance, good electrical properties, good chemical and solvent resistance and toughness consists essentially of a polymer of formula (I):Cp-ZA-Z&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)wherein Z is a bisphenyl sulfone moiety of formula: (II): A is a phthalazinone moiety of formula (III): Cp is A, as defined above, or a biphenol moiety of formula (IV): x is an integer of at least 1;y is an integer of at least 1; and x+y=n, where n is an integer such that the polymer has a weight average molecular weight of about 20,000 to about 170,000, the composition comprising less than 5%, by weight, of low molecular weight oligomers; and having a glass transition temperature (Tg) from 225 to 305&#xb0; C.

Polymers and copolymers of formula I: in which m is typically 30 to 500 and n is 0 to 500; Ar is for example, 1,2-phenylene, 1,3-phenylene, 1,4-phenylene, or 2,6-pyridylene; Arand Arare selected from various bivalent aryl and heteroaryl groups; and X is for example, the bivalent SOor CO. have high temperature properties which make them useful as films, matrices in carbon fiber reinforced composites and high performance adhesives; processes for preparing the polymers and copolymers employ a novel C&#x2014;N coupling reaction.

Poly(arylenebenzimidazole) polymers and copolymers

The invention relates to an improved composite used as a bipolar separator plate in fuel cells. The composite of the invention comprises a steel substrate having a carbon coating thereon, the carbon coating comprises a carbon layer derived by pyrolysis of an acetylenic polymer having a content of carbon of at least 90%, the carbon layer protects the substrate against corrosion and improves long term contact resistivity, the polymer is soluble at a temperature below 110&deg; C. in an organic solvent, and the carbon layer contacts said steel substrate. A process for preparing the composite according to the invention is also disclosed.

Low molecular weight cyclic oligomers of formula (I) ##STR1## in which n is an integer of 2 to 20, and each C in the oligomer is a radical of formula (II): ##STR2## and each X in the oligomer is --O--R--O-- or --S--R--S--, B and D are both carbonyl groups CO, or together represent a divalent radical of formula ##STR3## in which A.sub.1, A.sub.2, A.sub.3 A.sub.4, Ar.sub.1, Ar.sub.2 and Ar.sub.3 are selected from a variety of aromatic radicals, A.sub.1, A.sub.2, Ar.sub.3 and Ar.sub.4 also possibly being hydrogen, are useful in the production of high molecular weight, linear, polyketones, polyphthalazines and polyisoquinolines; the cyclic oligomers have low melt viscosities when heated above their softening temperatures and can be readily molded, whereafter they can be ring-open polymerized to form molded high molecular weight polymer products with excellent properties.

Bis-N-aminoimides of formula (III): ##STR1## wherein m is 0 or 1 and  is a mono- or polycyclic aromatic radical, can be employed to produce a variety of polymers of the type produced from diamines, including polyimides having an N--N linkage; polymers can be produced having exceptionally high glass transition temperatures, but which are also soluble in organic solvents; colored polymers and electroconductive polymers and photoconductive polymers can also be produced.

Hydroxy-substituted-bis-phenyl cyclopropanes of formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are selected from H or OH, at least one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 being o, m or p-OH, are useful as monomers to provide cross-linkable polymers useful in fiber reinforced plastics, thermosetting molding compounds, elastomers, advanced composites and other applications; the compounds (I) may be produced by the base catalyzed decomposition of a pyrazoline of formula (II): ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are as defined hereinbefore.
