An apparatus and method for mirroring data is provided wherein integrity of data on a mirror device is maintained during and after a restore process of data to a standard volume. Because integrity of the mirror is maintained, data from the mirror may be used to perform a later restore to the standard volume if data becomes corrupted, or data is unavailable for any other reason. As a result, the mirror may be used for backup or other operations.

The invention is directed to techniques for providing security in data storage systems that provide access to data by other systems, such as host computer systems. A data access manager generates access tokens that it assigns to storage locations that store data in one or more data storage assemblies in the data storage system. A host that makes a request to access specific storage locations having data must obtain an access token associated with those storage locations from the data access manager, and provide the access token with the request to the data storage system. The data storage system then authenticates the request based on the access token.

Methods and apparatus for providing security for a data storage system

A network accelerator storage caching system manages a number of cache management systems and may be inserted at any point in a network to provide a configurable, scalable variety of cache management systems to improve perceived response time. Depending on the configuration(s) selected, a cache management system may manage data in a storage cache on the basis of time-currency, page usage frequency, charging considerations, pre-fetching algorithms, data-usage patterns, store-through methods for updated pages, a least recently used method, B-tree algorithms, or indexing techniques including named element ordering, among others. In a preferred embodiment the configurable cache management is embedded in the storage media, either as firmware in a storage controller or as software executing in a central processing unit (CPU) in a storage controller. In a preferred embodiment the network accelerator storage caching system provides security measures for protecting data and is dynamically configurable.

A method of operating a data storage system that includes a plurality of host connections for connecting host processors to the data storage system. The data stroage system includes digital storage that is partitioned into a plurality of volumes. The method includes the steps of mapping the plurality of volumes to the plurality of host connections so that each of the host connections has associated therewith a corresponding subset of the volumes and wherein a host processor connected to any given one of the host connections is able to access only the volumes that are mapped to that host connection. In the data storage system, supporting a connect and a disconnect command. The connect command enables a host processor to map a designated one of the volumes to a designated one of the host connections; and the disconnect command enables a host processor to unmap a designated one of the volumes from a designated one of the host connections.
