The present disclosure relates to a strategy to synthesize antimony- and zinc-doped tin oxide particles with tunable band gap characteristics. The methods yield stable and monodispersed particles with great control on uniformity of shape and size. The methods produce undoped and antimony and zinc-doped tin oxide stand-alone and core-shell particles, both nanoparticles and microparticles, as well as antimony and zinc-doped tin oxide shells for coating particles, including plasmonic core particles.

Systems and methods for recovering rare earth metals from rare earth metal-containing magnets includes fragmenting or commutating the magnets, contacting the commutated magnets with a mixture of low molecular weight carboxylic acids such as formic acid and water, and removing or extracting non-rare earth metal carboxylate phases such as an iron carboxylate (formate) phase from a rare earth metal carboxylate (formate) phase, using a solvent such as water.

Crystals of [VOBDC](HBDC)were synthesized hydrothemally. The guest acid molecules were removed by heating in air to give high quality single crystals of VOBDC. VOBDC was observed to show crystal-to-crystal transformations on absorption of the guest molecules aniline, thiophene and acetone from the liquid phase. Accurate structural data of the guest molecules and framework deformations were obtained from single crystal X-ray data. VOBDC was also shown to absorb selectively thiophene and dimethyl sulphide from methane.

An eta phase composition in powder form, prepared in the absence of sulfur or sulfur bearing compounds, having a surface area greater than about 2m.sup.2 /g and consisting of X.sub.6 Y.sub.6 Z.sub.a wherein X is at least one element selected from the group consiting of Mo and W, Y is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Fe, Co. Ni, Mo and W, Z is at least one element selected from the group consisting of C, N and combinations thereof such that when Z is N, a is greater than or equal to 1 but less than or equal to 2 and when Z is C, a is greater than 1 but less than or equal to 2 except when Z is C and Y is Fe, then a is greater than or equal to 1 but less than or equal to 2. The eta phase may be a carbide, nitride or carbonitride. A method for producing the eta-phase composition includes providing a precursor compound including at least two eta-phase forming metals, and a ligand containing carbon, nitrogen or combinations thereof. The precursor compound is thermally decomposed in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, free of sulfur or sulfur bearing compounds, and reacts with carbon or nitrogen derived from the decomposition of the ligand with the metals to form the eta-phase. The eta phase forming metals are at lest two of the metals tungsten, molybdenum, nickel, cobalt and iron. These eta-phase composition may be used for producing or converting hydrocarbons or alcohols. This includes hydrogenation of CO (to produce at least one hydrocarbon or at least one alcohol and hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and olefinic hydrocarbons), isomerization and dehydrogenation.

Processes for the conversion of hydrocarbons, and most preferably methane, to higher hydrocarbons and olefins are disclosed, including contacting the hydrocarbons with a mixed metal oxide catalyst having the pyrochlore structure. Preferably, these catalysts have the general formula A.sub.n B.sub.2 O.sub.7-x, where A can be various mono-, di-, and trivalent metal cations, B can be various tri-, tetra-, penta-, and hexavalent metal cations, 0.ltoreq.n.ltoreq.2.0, and 0.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.1.0.
