An improved sample introduction probe is disclosed for the production of ions from liquid sample solutions in an electrospray ion source. Nebulization of a liquid sample emerging from the end of an inner flow tube is pneumatically assisted by gas flowing from the end of an outer gas flow tube essentially coaxial with the inner sample flow tube. The disclosed probe provides for adjustment of the relative axial positions of the ends of the liquid and gas flow tubes without degrading the precise concentricity between the inner and outer tubes. Additionally, the terminal portion of the outer gas flow tube may be fabricated either from a conductive or dielectric material, thereby allowing the pneumatic nebulization and electrospray processes to be optimized separately and independently. Hence, the disclosed invention provides a pneumatically-assisted electrospray probe with improved mechanical and operational stability, reliability, reproducibility, and ease of use compared to prior art probes.

Charged droplet spray probe

A Time-Of-Flight mass spectrometer ( ) is configured with a pulsing region ( ) and electronic controls to cause the directing of ions to a surface ( ) in the Time-Of-Flight pulsing region ( ). The population of ions resulting from the collecting of said ions on or near said surface ( ) is subsequently accelerated into the Time-Of-Flight tube ( ) for mass to charge analysis. Ions produced away from said surface ( ) can be directed to the surface ( ) with high or low surface collisional energies. Higher energy ion collisions with the surface ( ) can result in Surface Induced Dissociation fragmentation and the resulting ion fragment population can be mass analyzed. Mass analysis can be performed prior to directing the ions to the surface allowing MS/MS Time-Of-Flight mass analysis with SID. Ion to surface low energy collisions or soft landings resulting in little or no ion fragmentation provide a means for spatially focusing ions on or near the surface prior to accelerating the surface collected ions into the Time-Of-Flight tube.

Mass spectrometry from surfaces

A single or multiple layer curved Electrospray sample introduction means has been configured in an Atmospheric Pressure Ion (API) source interfaced to a mass analyzer. Sample solutions introduced through curved or bent sample introduction Electrospray (ES) probes configured in an API source are sprayed from the ES probe tip at an angle which differs from centerline of the ES probe body. Single or multiple curved ES probes can be configured in an Atmospheric Pressure Ion source interfaced to mass analyzers. Curved ES probes can also be configured in an API source which includes Atmospheric Pressure Chemical ionization.

A miniature multipole rod assembly which can be operated as an ion guide or a mass analyzer is constructed by bonding individual rods directly to plates which are separated by ceramic insulators. The multipole rod assemblies are constructed by using a fixture which locates and orients all elements during the process or bonding the rods to the disks.

Multiple rod construction for ion guides and mass spectrometers

A device for placing a catheter in a patient comprises a splittable hollow needle having a bifurcated proximal end and a pair of handles, each having a body portion and an extension, which are attached to a respective bifurcation of the hollow needle. With each handle attached to a respective bifurcation, the body portions of the handles are juxtaposed and the catheter is slidably received within the hollow needle. A squeezing together of the extensions will cause the body portions to separate and spread the bifurcations to split the needle. The splitting of the needle permits disjoining the needle from the catheter.

Articulated catheter placement device

A syringe driving unit comprising free pistons in interconnected cylindrical chambers, one of the pistons carrying a syringe plunger driver and being biased, directly or indirectly, in the driving direction, and one piston being movable to force both pistons into primed or loaded position, the connections between the chambers including a pressure regulator, flow regulator and a needle valve to regulate adjustably the return flow or hydraulic fluid corresponding to the movement of the driving piston. The priming piston may be moved mechanically or pneumatically, and fail-safe mechanism may be provided, if needed, to become effective in case of leakage. Bolus delivery, to augment optionally the adjusted flow, is also provided for.
