An effective composite for absorbing both standing and flowing water which comprises a fumed silica component, a water-absorbent acrylic polymer a fibrous component, and three types of scoriaceous components is described. Bags containing the composite may also be used.

This invention provides solid phase specific binding lateral flow assay methods, devices and kits for quantitating high and low molecular weight analytes. The methods and devices of the invention employ labelled reagents which are either analyte analogs or complementary specific binding pair members for the analyte and a novel arrangement of capture zones comprising immobilized specific binding substances for either the analyte or the labelled reagent to effect bound from unbound labelled reagent as a function of analyte concentration. The capture zones are disposed on a non-bibulous matrix defining a flow path from a sample receiving zone to the capture zone. The devices of this invention also include multilane flow paths and multiple capture zones to quantitate analyte.

Quantitative lateral flow assays and devices

One-step enzyme immunoassays in which enzyme-antibody conjugate or label and enzyme substrate are separated until separation of bound and free enzyme conjugate or label is complete. The efficiency and accuracy of one-step lateral flow assays can be improved by employing more efficient binding between participants in labeling and capture. Thus, in addition to analyte/anti-analyte interactions, specific binding is achieved through members of an irrelevant specific binding pair. Also included within the invention is a format wherein unlabeled competitor for analyte serves as a gatekeeper in the capture zone, competing with analyte for labeled anti-analyte, which analyte will be captured in a detecting portion of a capture zone.

One-step lateral flow assays

A method and device for detecting the presence, absence or amount of an analyte in a whole blood sample is disclosed. The device comprises four zones, a sample receiving zone, a labeling zone, a capture zone and an absorbent zone. The sample receiving zone contains an irreversibly immobilized reagent that allows for removal of substantially all red blood cells from the whole blood sample. Flow through the device is via capillary migration and all of the dissolved or dispersed components in the sample flow at substantially equal rates and with relatively unimpaired flow through the device. The method involves the use of the device for detection of analyte in a whole blood sample.

A sensitive and specific antigen preparation for the detection of Helicobacter pylori in biological samples is disclosed. The preparation uses a range of antigens derived from size exclusion chromatography of detergent-solubilized H. pylori cells. Serological assays such as ELISA, latex agglutination, and rapid EIA assays utilizing the improved antigen preparation, and a kit for use in these serological assays are also disclosed.

Methods and devices for distinguishing between normal and abnormal pregnancies are provided. The methods rely on determining the concentration of progesterone or progesterone metabolite in a patient sample, where a concentration above a threshold value is indicative of a normal pregnancy. Preferably, the concentration of hCG is determined simultaneously, where an hCG concentration above a threshold value provides confirmation that the individual being tested is pregnant. An exemplary test device comprises a lateral flow membrane having zones for capturing label in response to the progesterone and hCG concentrations, respectively. Visible label is accumulated when the hCG concentration exceeds the threshold value but is absent when the progesterone concentration exceeds the threshold value.
