The pressure drop through a passageway that flows a compressible fluid that flows axially with a vortex component is reduced by dividing the passageway into smaller parallel passageways. The vortex separator is combined with a deoiler that includes a rotatable inducer and porous media disk(s) in a lubrication system for removing the oil from the air where the oil is contaminated in the bearing compartments and gear boxes of a gas turbine engine.

Deoiler shaft vortex separator

An inducer with reduced number of blades and varying density porous media disks are arranged in a deoiler mounted on a rotating shaft for total free separation of the oil from and air/oil mixture. The porous media disks are arranged with the lower density grade coming into contact with the air/oil mixture and proceeds toward the higher density grade. The arrangement of the stages of separation, the specially designed oil discharge holes and the flow geometry maximizes oil separation and removal and reduces pressure losses to control the pressure drop of the deoiler.

Multi-stage deoiler with porous media

A deoiler for a jet engine which separates oil droplets from an air/oil mixture in three stages, the first stage employing external radial extending vanes having a curved inducer, the second stage employing vanes which are laid over in the direction of rotation of the deoiler, the windows through which the air/oil mixture flows from the second stage to the third stage being contoured to provide a maximum path for oil droplets to the second stage bleed holes.
