The invention combines tiles with an optimal width to thickness ratio together into array(s), and then affixes the array(s) to a depressible adhesive coated substrate. This combination of array(s) and substrates compliments the optimal tile thickness to width ratio to create a more advantageous directional shift of energy dissipation that creates a yaw of the bullet's direction, and subsequent increase of ceramic thickness that the projectile must pass through. The invention eliminates hard epoxies and rigid fiber induced wraps to create a truly flexible matrix that can be applied for use to protect the body with traditional concealable or tactical carriers, or can be used as a 'peel and stick' high threat armor system that can be easily field mounted to a vehicle, structure, or aircraft.

A ballistic tile for use in an imbricated pattern of like ballistic tiles to achieve coverage of a protected area by the imbricated pattern, while having rounded corners to limit the potential for spalling on ballistic impact. The ballistic tile may include a strike face that is generally undulating to laterally deflect at least a portion of the impact force, and to induce turning of the ballistic projectile on impact to further distribute the impact force. The ballistic tile may also include one or more features on an obverse and reverse side thereof that, when arranged in an imbricated pattern, limit lateral motion of the tiles on ballistic impact, and/or laterally transmit the energy of the projectile for deflection and absorption thereof.

A plurality tile are retained in an imbricated pattern row by row such that each disk in a row is in substantially a straight line with the other disks in the row and overlaps a segment of a disk in an adjacent row. The imbricated pattern is then adhered to a flexible, high tensile strength substrate and overlaid by a second high tensile strength layer such that the imbricated pattern is enveloped between the substrate and the second layer. The envelope is then coupled to a soft body armor backing.

A method and apparatus for defeating high-velocity projectiles. A plurality of disks of equal size comprised of fiber induced ceramic composites are provided. The disks are laid out in an imbricated pattern row by row such that each disk in a row is in substantially a straight line with the other disks in the row and overlaps a segment of a disk in an adjacent row. The imbricated pattern is then adhered to a flexible, high tensile strength substrate and overlaid by a second high tensile strength layer such that the imbricated pattern is enveloped between the substrate and the second layer. The envelope is then coupled to a soft body armor backing.

Each milled place having a radius of curvature approximately equal to the radius of curvature of the disk. Method and apparatus for defeating high-velocity projectiles

Provided is a seamless soft body armor capable of withstanding penetration from both blunt missiles, e.g. bullets, and cutting implements, e.g. knives, which is relatively light-weight and flexible. To avoid seams, the body armor is formed from a plurality of layers of metallic material, each of which is formed from titanium foil, with a central portion of each layer rigidly attached to a central portion of an adjacent layer of metallic material with adhesive to form a rigid portion disposed between two flexible side regions. The flexible side regions are provided so that the body armor may conform to a shape of a human torso. The metallic layers are sandwiched between a pair of spaced apart fiber layers, with the periphery of the fiber layers attached to each other. The metal layers form two sections of the armor material: the base and the strike face. The outer edge of the base extends beyond the outer edge of the strike surface to reduce weight while affording greater resistance to penetration. The periphery of the fiber terminates approximately 0.5 inch from the outer edge of the base to provide comfort when worn by a user.
