The present invention relates to a metallic coating to be deposited on gas turbine engine components. The metallic coating comprises up to 18 wt % cobalt, 3.0 to 18 wt % chromium, 5.0 to 15 wt % aluminum, 0.1 to 1.0 wt % yttrium, up to 0.6 wt % hafnium, up to 0.3 wt % silicon, 3.0 to 10 wt % tantalum, up to 9.0 wt % tungsten, 1.0 to 6.0 wt % rhenium, up to 10 wt % molybdenum, and the balance nickel.

Oxidation and fatigue resistant metallic coating

A method is taught for protecting copper and copper-based composites from high temperature oxidation, by the application thereto of a cobalt-based alloy diffusion barrier and a copper-aluminum alloy protective outer layer.

Oxidation resistant coatings for copper

According to the present invention, an apparatus for applying material by cathodic arc vapor deposition to a substrate is provided which includes a vessel, apparatus for maintaining a vacuum in the vessel, an annular cathode having a bore and an evaporative surface extending between first and second end surfaces, apparatus for selectively sustaining an arc of electrical energy between the cathode and an anode, and apparatus for steering the arc around the evaporative surface. The apparatus for steering the arc is positioned within the cathode bore, and produces a magnetic field that runs substantially parallel to the evaporative surface. The annular cathode is disposed radially inside of, and aligned with, the substrates inside the vessel.

Cathodic arc vapor deposition apparatus (annular cathode)

An apparatus for applying material by cathodic arc deposition to a substrate is provided which includes a vessel, means for maintaining a vacuum in the vessel, a cathode, a contactor, means for selectively sustaining an arc of electrical energy between the cathode and an anode, and an actuator. The cathode and contactor are positioned inside the vessel, and the contactor is electrically connected to the means for selectively sustaining an arc of electrical energy. The actuator selectively actuates the contactor into electrical contact with the cathode, and thereby electrically connects the cathode to the means for sustaining an arc of electrical energy.

Cathodic arc vapor deposition apparatus

A thermal barrier coating for high temperature applications has improved resistance to heat flow. The coating comprises a large number of these (nanometer scale) layers separated by interfaces which are effective in retarding heat flow. The coating material will typically be oxide based ceramics and the coating has particular applications in gas turbine engines.

A method is taught for preparing titanium alloys having high temperature oxidation resistance, whereby a coating of a copper bronze containing up to 10 percent aluminum and up to 6 percent silicon is applied to the titanium substrate by cathodic arc deposition or ion vapor deposition.

A method for coating articles, such as gas turbine blades, with a coating of variable thickness by securing a shield having one or more holes extending therethrough to the article thereby defining a shielded portion of the article, exposing the article and shield to a metal-bearing gas which is circulated around the article to deposit a metallic coating thereon, wherein the circulation of the gas adjacent the shielded portion of the article is restricted by the presence of the shield, thereby producing a substantially thinner coating on the shielded portion of the article than on the unshielded portion.
