Systems and methods for increasing scalability and reducing latency in relation to managing large numbers of storage arrays of a storage network. Separate, dedicated, communication channels may be established between an array manager running on a server and each of a number of storage arrays for respectively performing reading and writing operations to limit the delays imposed by repeated array connection setup and teardown and improve array communication stability (e.g., as compared to performing read/write operations over the same array connection). The read connection can be used to maintain current state information (e.g., volumes, capacities, and the like) for a plurality of storage arrays in a local cache of the array manager that can be quickly accessed by the array manager, such as for presenting substantially current, summary-type state information of the various storage arrays to a user (e.g., upon the user requesting to configure a particular storage array).

Highly scalable storage array management with reduced latency

A system and method of installing a software patch on a selected electronic device using a graphical user interface is disclosed. The user utilizes a graphical user interface (GUI) to select a patch to install and selects an electronic device, the 'target' device, upon which to install the patch. Patch dependencies on the target device are programmatically determined and checked to ensure that software required for the patch is present on the target device. The installation of the patch is then performed. The illustrative embodiment of the present invention also enables the removal of a patch from a targeted device following a determination of which applications on the target device are dependant upon the patch, and subsequent user authorization of the removal operation.

System and method for performing patch installation via a graphical user interface

Methods, systems, and computer-readable media are disclosed for having a primary process spawn a secondary process to create multiple data sets, thereby allowing the primary process to continue performing other tasks or to terminate. The primary and secondary processes can be virtual machines, such as Java Virtual Machines running in a computer system. The primary process gathers the raw data used to create the multiple data sets and stores the data in a serialized object. The primary process also runs a script to spawn a secondary process which accepts the serialized object as input. The serialized object is then deserialized and the raw data is operated on by the secondary process without any interference from the primary process. The primary process, responsible for maintaining a GUI for the user, can perform other tasks or terminate without effecting the secondary process. Thus, a user of the primary process is free to continue using the GUI and perform other tasks while the multiple data sets are created by the secondary process in the background.
