According to aspects of the invention there is provided a remote unit comprising a processor and one or more terminal interfaces, the processor being connected to the one or more terminal interfaces, the terminal interfaces configured for coupling with a set of terminals, wherein the processor is configured to perform quality of service network testing using one or more of the set of terminals over one or more communication networks.

A method for determining the availability of at least one target user for a specific type of communication is described. The method comprises: retrieving contact information of at least one target user from a memory of a requesting user terminal; sending a request for communication status information of the at least one target user to a status network element, the status network element being arranged to provide the communication status information regarding the availability of the target user for the specific type of communication, wherein the request comprises at least a portion of the contact information of the at least one target user and identifies the specific type of communication; receiving, as a response to the request, a response message from the status network element, wherein the response message comprises the communication status information of the at least one target user; and modifying at least a portion of stored contact information when the received status information indicates that the target user is available for communication via the specific communication type, such that the modified contact information indicates on the requesting user terminal the current availability of the at least one user for communication via the specific communication type.

Facilitating arrangement in a communication system

A method of managing identities for use in a mobile telecommunications device in a telecommunications network has the following features. The identity management process is triggered and one or more parameters of a currently available mobile telecommunications network detected. An identity database is searched&#x2014;each record in the identity database comprises an identity and additional identity information for each identity. The additional identity information includes the one or more parameters. The identity management process involves selecting an identity when a first record comprising the one or more parameters detected is found in said searching and modifying an active identity of the mobile telecommunications device to be the selected identity when the active identity is not already the selected identity. This process can be carried out by a subscriber information module of a mobile telecommunications device.

A method of managing configuration of user equipment that has a configuration database modifiable with configuration data in a first format, and a communications unit for receiving configuration data in a second format is described. A method of managing identities for use in a mobile telecommunications device in a telecommunications network is described. First of all, an identity management process is triggered. After this, one or more parameters associated with the mobile telecommunications device is detected. The identity management process than has the following features. An identity management rule determined by the one or more parameters is detected. An identity database is then searched. Each record of the identity database comprises an identity and additional identity information for each identity, wherein the searching prioritizes records according to the identity management rule. An identity is then selected when a record conforming to the identity management rule is found in said searching. The active identity of the mobile telecommunications device is then changed to be the selected identity when the active identity is not already the selected identity. A subscriber identity module adapted for use with this method is described.
