Embodiments are directed towards remotely generating encoding metadata at a remote content distributor for use by a local user computing device. The remote content distributor receives and encodes content. During or after the encoding process, the remote content distributor generates encoding metadata that indicates how the content was encoded by the remote content distributor. The remote content distributor provides the encoding metadata to the user computer device. The user computing device receives the content and the encoding metadata and encodes the content based on the encoding metadata. The user computing device can then provide the encoded content to another computing device for decoding and presentation to a user.

Remotely generated encoding metadata for local content encoding

A system that monitors toilets for leaks using in-toilet monitors with pressure sensors that are placed underwater in toilet tanks. Monitors can be dropped into tanks without additional wiring or installation; they may be battery powered and may transmit data wirelessly. Data may be analyzed by a server that detects leaks or other malfunctions. Pressure data may be filtered to remove the effect of barometric pressure, to measure the height of water in the tank. The system may learn the flush pressure change pattern for each toilet; pressure changes that do not match this pattern may indicate problems such as leaks. Data may indicate the type of leak, such as an open flapper or a leaking valve. Toilet monitors may measure temperature, and the system may generate alerts when freezing appears imminent. The system may keep flush counts for each toilet to support maintenance and water consumption measurement.

A climate control system that detects presence of a person in a room by analyzing small fluctuations in barometric pressure due to breathing. When the room is occupied, thermostatic control by the occupant may be enabled; when unoccupied, HVAC systems may be set to a low-power state. Barometric data may be processed using a bandpass filter that passes frequencies that correspond to typical human respiration rates. Barometric data may be used to determine when doors or windows are open or closed. Embodiments may connect to property management systems determine whether occupants are expected; when a room unoccupied but an occupant is expected, HVAC systems may be set to a standby state that saves power but allows temperature to return quickly to desired levels when a person enters the room. Occupancy detection may also use data from other sensors such as gas analyzers that detect compounds in exhaled breath.

Climate controller that determines occupancy status from barometric data

Embodiments are directed toward locally generating a replacement spot beam signal to be combined with other orbital television signals, where the replacement spot beam signal is generated from locally received over-the-air television signals. Over-the-air television signals are received at a user's premises via an over-the-air antenna and orbital signals are received at the user's premises via a satellite antenna. The orbital signals include a spot beam signal and other orbital signals. The spot beam signal is specifically generated for the geographical area associated with the over-the-air television signals. One or more available local channels are extracted from the over-the-air television signals and are converted into the replacement spot beam signal that is a satellite-compatible signal. The replacement spot beam, instead of the original spot beam signal, is then combined with the other orbital signals and provided to a content receiver.

Each cord may monitor power delivered to device(s), and measure variables including temperature, humidity, pressure. It may also act as a gateway to other devices in the vicinity. Alerts may include attempted theft when a device is unplugged, environmental conditions or a staff member requesting assistance via an emergency alert forwarded through a smart power cord.
